after the shanghai grand prix, you had fully expected your night to go one of two ways.
either you would spend hours replaying the race in your head, analysing every corner and every decision you made, or you would end up sitting in your hotel room scrolling through every article and comment about your podium until you convinced yourself you could have done better. (it was a habit you hated admitting you had.)
the moment something good happened, your brain immediately searched for the thing you could’ve done wrong.
your first podium should have been something you celebrated but instead, you were already thinking about how close you were to the top step which was exactly why you were surprised when your phone buzzed.
you stood in front of the mirror, staring at yourself for a moment longer than you meant to.
the black dress was everything you had hoped it would be. elegant, simple, and somehow it made you feel like a completely different version of yourself. the fabric fell perfectly, moving softly every time you shifted, catching the light in a way that made you stop and admire it.
you weren’t used to dressing up like this.
most days, you were surrounded by racing suits, team gear, messy hair, and long days where comfort mattered more than anything else. but tonight was different. tonight, you wanted to feel pretty. you wanted to walk into the room and feel confident.
you lightly adjusted the dress, smoothing out a tiny crease before looking back at your reflection.
“okay…” you whispered to yourself, smiling slightly. “i actually like this.”
your hair was styled perfectly, with a few loose strands framing your face. your makeup was soft but elegant, bringing out your features without feeling like you were trying too hard. the final touch was your jewellery, a small detail that somehow completed the whole look.
something that felt like you.
for the first time in days, you weren’t dressing like a formula one driver.
you were just a girl going out for dinner.
when you arrived at the restaurant, you immediately spotted them.
alexandra was sitting closest to the entrance, scrolling through her phone while waiting.
lily was taking pictures of the table setup and carmen was laughing at something on her phone.
you walked over. “sorry, i’m late.”
all three of them looked up. lily checked the time dramatically. “wow.”
you narrowed your eyes. “don’t.”
alexandra smiled. “for y/n, that’s early.”
you pouted. “it’s not my fault!”
carmen laughed. “you’ve been here for five minutes and you’re already offended.”
“because you’re all wrong.”
the best part was that nobody asked about the race straight away and you appreciated that more than you could explain.
they just asked about you.
“so,” lily said, picking up her drink. “what is y/n like when she’s not driving?”
you looked confused. “what?”
“because we know racing y/n.”
alexandra nodded. “focused. competitive. terrifying.”
“but we don’t know normal y/n.”
you laughed softly. “i’m normal.” you looked between them. “what?”
carmen smiled. “that was the least believable thing you’ve said all day.”
then eventually, the conversation turned into stories.
it was mostly embarrassing ones.
because apparently everyone in the paddock had decided that drivers were funny people when they weren’t behind the wheel.
lily told you about alex refusing to admit he was lost even when he was clearly going the wrong way. “he drove around for twenty minutes.”
“did he ask for directions?”
“because he said he knew where he was going.”
alexandra started talking about charles. “he acts calm, but he’s secretly the most competitive person ever.”
you smiled. “that doesn’t surprise me.”
“he gets competitive over everything.”
“even things that don’t matter?”
lily nodded. “same with alex.”
carmen laughed. “george too.”
you immediately looked at her. “wait, really?”
you thought about it. “it’s just surprising.”
“can i ask something?” alexandra said after a while.
“how are you actually feeling?”
you looked down at your plate. “good.”
you sighed. “okay, i know that wasn’t convincing.”
carmen smiled softly. “you don’t have to pretend with us.”
you were quiet for a moment. “its just weird.”
“everything.” you looked around the table.“two races ago, nobody knew if i belonged here. and now i’m getting told i should’ve won. i know i should be happy. i am happy. i just…” you stopped.
alexandra finished gently. “you feel like you’re already expected to be perfect.”
you looked up and nodded.
“y/n,” lily said softly. “you’re allowed to be proud of yourself.”
you smiled slightly. “i know.”
you laughed. “why does everyone keep saying that?”
“because you don’t believe it.”
the night ended with everyone taking photos outside the restaurant. just because it was a good memory.
lily insisted on taking about fifty photos. “we need options.”
you laughed as she showed you the pictures. most were blurry and some were terrible but they were real. not staged.
you probably should have gone back to the hotel.
realistically, you knew that. you had a busy week ahead, you were still adjusting to the intensity of formula one weekends, and you were supposed to be resting after one of the biggest days of your career but then lily looked around at everyone. “we’re not going back yet.”
you immediately looked at her. “what?”
she smiled. “drinks. to properly celebrate”
you opened your mouth to respond, but alexandra beat you to it. “don’t say no.”
carmen raised an eyebrow. “you were definitely going to.”
you looked between them. “maybe.”
the three girls laughed because they were starting to learn something about you.
you were someone who could drive wheel-to-wheel against some of the best drivers in the world without hesitation, but when it came to actually relaxing, you struggled.
you always felt like you needed to be doing something: improving something or proving something so maybe a night away from all of that was exactly what you needed.
the bar they chose was quiet and tucked away from the busier parts of the city. it wasn’t the kind of place where cameras were waiting outside or where people would constantly interrupt you.
it was just somewhere you could sit, somewhere you could laugh qnd somewhere you could forget that tomorrow you would be back in the paddock, back in meetings, back answering questions about your future.
the four of you settled into a booth, and the conversation immediately moved away from racing.
you spent the night listening to stories about everyone’s lives outside the paddock.
lily talked about her golfing career while carmen talked about finance career and her love for watching tennis.
alexandra talked about leo and recent artworks she had seen
“wait,” lily suddenly said, looking at you.
you looked up from your drink. “what?”
“have you actually ever been out drinking before?”
you thought about it. “not really.”
alexandra immediately looked suspicious. “what does not really mean?”
carmen laughed softly. “how many times?”
you hesitated, which was already an answer to them before saying. “a few.”
“you are a formula one driver. you’re telling me you can handle driving at three hundred kilometres per hour but you can’t handle a drink?”
you frowned. “that feels unrelated.”
“it’s extremely related.”
and they discovered just how unrelated it actually wasn’t about half an hour later because y/n l/n, mercedes rookie driver and future star of formula one, was apparently one of the biggest lightweights any of them had ever met.
you weren’t one of those chaotic drunks, you were just… happier. much more happier.
the serious, thoughtful driver who had walked into the restaurant carrying the weight of her first podium had disappeared and instead, you were laughing at everything, complimenting everyone, and telling stories that you had already told at least twice.
“you know you’ve told us that story already, right?” alexandra said gently.
you looked confused “i have?”
you nodded. “it was still funny.”
as the night continued, the girls quickly realised that drunk y/n was just a more honest version of normal y/n.
you told alexandra that charles was lucky to have her.
you told lily that she was one of the funniest people you had met.
and you told carmen that george was lucky because she kept him sane.
every time they tried to tell you that you were being too nice, you just stated. “i’m just telling the truth.”
eventually, when it was time to leave, everyone stopped outside the bar trying to figure out the next problem.
how exactly were you getting home?
you stared at them blankly when they asked. “i don’t know.”
lily blinked. “what do you mean you don’t know?”
you shrugged. “i didn’t think that far ahead.”
alexandra laughed. “y/n.”
“you came out without knowing how you were getting back?”
you thought about it. “because i assumed someone would know.”
carmen covered her face laughing. “that is such a y/n answer.”
after a few attempts at figuring it out, you decided to text lando, because i mean he knew your address and could drive you home safely.. you hoped.
when oscar arrived, he was expecting to pick up a tired teammate after a long race weekend. he was not expecting you to immediately smile when you saw him.
he laughed as he walked over. “hi.”
you stared at him for a few seconds and then you smiled. “your ears are cute.”
oscar stopped smiling. “my ears?”
you nodded seriously. “yeah. so cute.”
he looked genuinely confused. “thank you?”
then you smiled even wider. “and your smile.”
he raised an eyebrow. “stupid?”
“but cute.” you nodded as if you had just solved a complicated problem. “you have a stupid cute smile.”
oscar looked over at the girls, completely unsure what to say.
“how much did she drink?”
lily immediately answered. “not much.”
oscar looked back at you. “really?”
everyone laughed because you were clearly not.
lily, alexandra and carmen made sure you safely went into oscar’s car before waving goodbye to you.
the drive back was mostly you talking. oscar didn’t mind, actually, he found it kind of entertaining.
because normally, you were so controlled with every word carefully chosen and every answer thought through, but tonight, you were just honest.
after a quiet moment, you looked over. “you know you’re nice, right?”
oscar smiled slightly. “thanks.”
“no, really.” you looked out the window. “you’re too nice.”
when oscar dropped you off, he waited until you were safely inside before leaving.
you waved from the doorway. “buh-bye, osc.”
you smiled. “goodnight, cute ears.”
oscar smiled back as he walked back to his car and he couldn’t stop smiling the entire drive back.
