As she watched him, his lips turned upwards - soft and subtle. It felt like she peered into his soul; it always felt like that and it felt so good. It made him feel wanted, needed, accepted. He could be himself around her and reveal truths that no one else knew. Although with admitting the repayment, he couldnât help blush. âWell, yeah. I didnât, My papa and meâŚit was just us and we were dirt poorâŚbeyond dirt poor. Weâd go to bed hungry some nights. On NeverlandâŚit was me against that crazy ass nightmare,â he admitted. âAfter that, it was me, myself, and I. Then you came into my life. Gods. It felt like an angel came to me.â
Electric shivers trickled down his spine. Her touch. Oh her touch. It sent all thoughts from his head. For that brief moment, it was just her and him. Nothing mattered. Nothing existed. It was just them sitting by the fire enjoying each otherâs company. âYou are amazing, Emma. You have always been special. The second I saw you I feel in love. You stole my heart and I donât want you to give it back,â he whispered, sliding closer to the mother of his son. âI wanted to give you the world. I wanted you to have everything you deserved and more. It killed me giving you up. But I never stopped believing in you or what you had to do. I knew. I knew you could do it. I loved you then and I love you now.â
Heart beating fast, he pressed his lips together and placed his platter of food to the side. Heâd just revealed so much and saying those words filled him up. As she thanked him, his smile went sideways again and his nodded. But then Emma said something very unexpected. Never in a million years had he ever expected that nor had he ever felt more wanted. âOh, Emma. IâŚI donât know what to say,â he choked out. With shaking hands, he cupped her chin. Tilting her head ever so slightly, Neal leaned forward and kissed her with slow and gentleness. He removed one hand and cupped her lower back to offer support.
The way he looked at her, it made her feel like it was only them in the entire world. Just them peering into each other's eyes. The old feelings she had for him continued to rush back as they made a connection and stayed in close proximity. No one had ever spoken to her so eloquently. No one had made her feel this special, not even Killian, though she hated to admit it to herself. You never forget your first. "Neal.. I love you, you know that. And, I know that I.. probably always will. I don't think I could ever express how happy you made me back then. It felt like us against the world." He brought out the honesty in her and the compassion she held back from everyone who tried to get close to her.
Her face curled into a smile when she realized how happy she made him. Of course he would come back with them. If Henry knew Neal was here, he would do the same, she was sure of it. When he died, it killed her, but this was her chance to repay him for his sacrifice.
Emma didn't have much time to react to his hand cupping her chin, because his lips deliberately followed. The kiss wasn't forceful, and it wasn't heated, they kissed as softly as possible. It was a kiss that said, "I love you." She felt his hand on her back and she was so surprised that she pulled back from it to make sure she was seeing this correctly. Her eyes looked into his as her hand moved from his shoulder to the bare skin along his throat. "I--.." Somewhere inside her, something told her that she shouldn't go any farther until she told him why she was here. She was technically still with Killian, and he was out there somewhere. What would people say if she was sitting here kissing her old boyfriend while she should be looking for Killian. But.. the more she looked at the man in front of her, the less she seemed to care about what everyone would say. All she knew was what she felt. "I-- think we should do that again."
