You have been invited to take part in a research study that will contribute towards an undergraduate dissertation project. Before you agree to participate, it is crucial that you are aware of what the process will involve and why the research is being carried out. Please read the following information carefully before making your decision. This dissertation project is concerned with discovering how online fandoms and member participation can benefit individuals. Your involvement in this study includes a short online questionnaire that will be used alongside other participants’ data to gather an understanding of online fandom members. The data collected will be represented in a university submitted project that will count towards an undergraduate degree. You have been selected to participate due to your involvement in fandom activity and your experience as a member of an online community. A small sample of roughly twenty individuals have been asked to participate and each participant’s information will be submitted anonymously. This study is voluntary; it is your decision whether or not to take part. If you do decide to participate, you are free to withdraw at any time and you will not be required to give a reason. Your decision to take part is entirely your choice and if you chose to accept this invitation, please give your consent using the appropriate options at the end of this information. Participation in this study will require answering a few short questions that will take up no more than five minutes of your time and will require no follow-up, after you submit your answers to the questionnaire your participation is complete. Your information submitted will then be issued to the researcher on an entirely confidential basis, it will not be possible for the researcher to trace your answers back to you. Throughout the entire collection, storage and the publication processes of this research material, there will be complete anonymity. Participant privacy is protected by anonymous submissions and you will not be required to give out any confidential information, nor will it be possible to reveal your identity from the answers given. This study has been approved by the University Research Ethics Committee at Oxford Brookes University and will be conducted as part of a student dissertation submission for the Communication, Media and Culture undergraduate degree.
