i do kind of fear i'll never be able to switch away from neo kingdom index/codex now for the rest of ffxiv because like. look at it. look at it!!

a smn/sch book that's just your notes and journal is simply the coolest thing. the pen! the inkpot in the lower right! whatever that fancy bookmark/page holder system is at left! the plant cutting! the sketches! the letters! just so many delightful touches. really plays into my desire to play a WoL who has consciously set down their weapon as a show of good will and a sign that they're a peaceful explorer. fighting enemies with nothing but your field notes and some arcane circles you hastily sketched. also opens the idea that maybe your wol could be actively tinkering with the printed geometries they use to channel aether through for sch/smn spells, inking revised versions on new pages by the fireside at night. it's just fun!

emet-selch's role in the garlean empire is one of the best and funniest retcons ffxiv has ever implemented because all of a sudden almost every setting detail that didn't quite add up now works because an evil wizard did it.

like the nael thing goes from "what do you mean a young garlean officer's sister disappeared and father died in what was widely assumed to be an act of patricide, and then he publicly executed his house's officers and guards, and solus zos galvus said 'hang on, put THAT GUY in charge of a legion NOW'? how does that make any sense?" to "oooooh yeah. yeah he would do that."

me, 2 weeks into playing ffxiv: i dont respect any of these mfs whose names i cant even remember. i will probably uninstall later when i get bored

me, half a year into ffxiv: ok so the botanist questline in which the farmers at camp cloudtop get accused of heresy for infiltrating a non native crop into the country was PROBABLY a cover for house dzemael wanting to cause further stress on house haillenarte bc by destabilizing them, (the weakest link) this means house fortemps (powerhouse but kind of against the holy sees policies) will also be weakened by default. and fortemps controls the literal entry point to ishgard. its dangerous if they ever rebeled or revolted bc that can cut off ishgard from the rest of the continent. so it makes sense that the church would want them to have less influence or power overall, using house dzemael to do so bc we later know that house dzemael were the ones that tipped the fucking church abt the fucking vegetables. and house dzemael is the only house with active members that belong to the heaven's ward (grinnaux, violent guy whose murders were covered with coin & paulcrain, formerly of house fortemps. coincidentally the mfs who also arrest alphinaud and tataru of heresy)

everyone likes to make jokes about how huge and unusable the FFXIV settings are but the unfortunate truth is that that's kind of just what you need to have a large number of actually useful settings. like they could definitely do better at labeling (and it desperately needs, though I"m unsure the backend could accommodate, some kind of search), but it's also straight up the most powerful set of settings and tools a game has ever offered me i think

like this tiny slice of the sound panel alone is better than 99.99% of computer games. absolute gamechanger that nothing else even comes close to matching.
