       “ skip? are we allowed to skip now? ”  ben asks, voice a little high and offended. his arm sneaks away from under the fabric, makes its way to danny’s pillow. he pulls in short, weak bursts to annoy, to make danny look back at him.   “ i don’t think that’s how this works… ”

  honestly ben doesn’t like the idea of having to tell the truth or doing a dare. but he dug his own grave, and now he has to face the consequences. fingers keep pulling on the edges of danny’s pillow, arm awkwardly angled upwards upwards. he is not trying to pull the pillow away anymore, just softly fiddling.

considering truth and dare: there are many questions he wouldn’t be able to answer, there are many things he’s tried to say out loud when asked in the past but turned into lies the moment he opened his mouth. it’s like someone else speaks for him, uses his voice in ways he can’t predict. truth would be no good. but dare would be exhausting. he flops his hand back onto the air mattress.           “ Truth is fine. ” 

           it’s tragic really, he likes it so much better when danny talks.

                danny makes out the movement of the pillow; the only thing in this dark dark room besides ben’s voice he has any bearings of. he tracks the pillow scuffling away from him until it stops and his eyes land on ben, or where he’s sure he would find ben if mum or dad came in and switched the light on. if all else fails, he’s staring blindly at the floor.   ‘ skips are never allowed but you’re not playing right so neither am i. ’

                fuck if ben will do a dare. he’s sunken so deep into the adjacent sleeping bag that if the light were switched on, danny may as well spot a chrysalis of a giant teenage boy on the carpet. no way ben would get out of there to get out of the thing and shriek down the corridor on danny’s command. a dare is a dare is a dare, but ben’s rubbish at this game. danny has no choice but to ascertain some type of brain power for some truth question. he swats at ben’s hand picking at his pillowcase.   ‘ and quit it, i’m sleeping here. ’

                he thinks. he’s not keen on this. danny loves a dare; a dare is proving loyalty without opening your mouth. truth’s are so much harder to dance around.   ‘ do you like staying here? ’

" his voice goes higher at the end of the sentence. takes one to know one, byrd. maybe they can go see a movie. it's a thursday, but neither of them are where they're supposed to be. might as well go to the movies. this isn’t mortifying because rolling one day into the next for no good reason all by yourself is mortifying, being found out you’ve done that is the next thing up, and danny hadn’t planned to find out that vocab today because he hadn’t planned on being found out full stop. maybe drunk alone is the better option. he can roll with that — what a pun. ‘ i’m drunk. ’ he nods wistfully. this is a lie he’s jumping on the back of and riding to the moon. ‘ soooooo drunk. really drunk. from last night, yeah. ’ hands up. ‘ you got me! ’

‘ maybe, ’    he  starts  to  mutter  because  he’s  only  really  seen  this  on  youtube  before  but  then  his  hands  start  to  move  and  now  he’s  all,    ‘ ... ’    a  heavy  pause.  deliberation.  looking  for  a  pointed  candid  camera.  uneasily,  he  eyes  the  board,  then  spirit,  and  says  (not  a  question),    ‘ who  told  them  my  name. ’
