West Bend, WI – Halo Lit LED Channel Letters for Cafe Floriana with Cloud Backer

Now that’s an impressive sign! Our customer, Cafe Floriana located in West Bend, needed a sign that would really stand out but there were a few restrictions placed on us and the design by the property owner.  It all added up to one interesting project.

Cafe Floriana is located in West Bend and specializes in coffee, espresso,  light breakfast fare, and soup and sandwiches.  They provide high-quality fare for a modest price. When they approached us to build the sign for them, they had been working with a smaller sign company in West Bend that just hadn’t been able to get the design correct.  The sizes were wrong and conflicted with the sign code, the colors and layout conflicted with the property owner's sign requirements and the overall look didn’t excite our customer.  So basically, we were starting from the beginning.

We started with the city sign code. Because the building is a historical building, we had size and design limitations.  Not a big deal.  Now we applied the building owner's requirements and things started to get interesting.  Two of the requirements actually conflicted with city ordinances so we had to coordinate a meeting with the property owner and the city to iron out the conflicts.  Once that was done we had a working plan for the sign.  Our customer was set on having halo-lit channel letters. This does provide a very distinctive look. The only issue was that the sign code required that the channel letters be mounted on a raceway to contain all the wiring and power supplies.  If we just went ahead and mounted halo letters on a raceway, the light would reflect off of the raceway and you would be able to see the raceway from the street. This isn’t the look that we want.  We decided the best way to give our customer what she wanted was to cut out a “cloud” backer to mount the channel letters on before mounting them to the raceway.  This way the light reflected off of the white backer and hid the raceway completely.  The perfect look for this sign.

Brookfield, WI – Custom Exterior LED Channel Letter Sign for ASCGT

No this isn’t a blog about the tree. Our customer was the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy. What do they do you ask? The American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy (ASGCT) is the primary membership organization for scientists, physicians, professionals, and patient advocates involved in gene and cell therapy. Their mission is to advance knowledge, awareness, and education leading to the discovery and clinical application of gene and cell therapies to alleviate disease—they do that by serving as a catalyst to transform medicine by advancing gene and cell therapies to benefit patients and society. That’s a mouthful.  These folks are solid people that do great work.

One of our customers brought us into the project to assist as they have done work with us and were very happy with our work. Referrals are critical to our business.  We started with their logo.  We also started with the property owners as they have a standard for these signs.  Our contact gave us the details and we were able to design to those standards and present ASCGT with a design we knew the building owner would approve of.  We also pulled the municipal standards for this property so we could ensure that the sign design would be approved by the municipality.  We did have to present our design to the design and review board for final approval.  After about 15 minutes in front of the board, we had our permits.  This is where it gets interesting.  Our fabricator put the sign into production and completed the fabrication on Tuesday. They got the UL certification on Friday and moved the sign to the shipping warehouse.  Less than 24 hours later the fabricator’s manufacturing facility was consumed by fire.  The entire facility was burned to the ground, except the warehouse.  The papers from the UL certification were still sitting on top of the sign after the fire!  WOW!

Brookfield, WI – Brushed Aluminum Magnetic Lobby Sign for Sewer Ninjas

So what do you do when your business building offers short-term leases to small businesses but you want to have signage to help customers find the businesses? You call on Optimum Signs to design a solution.

So who are Sewer Ninjas? Sewer Ninjas opened to help meet a need in the real estate industry. They started out providing sewer inspections to homebuyers. This service protected the buyer from costly repairs down the road.  They are now taking the inspection one step further by helping the homeowner with the repair. This new technology can repair the system without having to dig up the existing lateral, saving thousands, plus provides a lifetime of protection. They are dedicated to solving sewer issues with the latest technology to minimize cost and disruption. They are a local, family-owned business, and take pride in every job, large or small.

We knew that the key requirement for this job was that it had to look classy yet it had to be easily updated with minimum expense.  We started off with brushed aluminum acrylic. We created the shape on a standard CNC machine running custom software.  We also decided that we had to leave space for the individual panels for each tenant. The problem came in with the relief cut that the bit for the CNC machine makes. It removes about 1/8″ of the material which is twice as wide as we wanted the spaces between the panels.  We figured that if we cut out a “frame” along with the header we would be able to offer one piece to mount on the wall.  We cut the individual nameplates out of the remainder of the material.  But if the material is acrylic how does it stick to the frame? Magnets.  We placed magnetic tape on the back part of the frame.  We put metal tape on the nameplates.  This allows for easy replacement when a tenant moves out. The names are all engraved into the material and because the backer of the brushed aluminum is black PVC, it works brilliantly.

New Berlin, WI – Custom Window Graphics for World Martial Arts Academy

Ok. I have to admit it.  I have been a student at World Martial Arts for the past 10+ years. My family and I are all multi degreed black belts and my daughters are both instructors.  There is no better place to learn martial arts than World Martial Arts and Grand Master Yun is the best teacher I have ever worked with.  That makes this job personal for me.

When we started working on the design for this job, we gathered a number of pictures from Grand Master Yun that he might want to see on the windows.  We then designed a number of options using characters that were prevalent throughout the Korean populace.  We used symbols that appear throughout the culture and are very dominate in the Tae Kwon Do community.  We submitted 14 different designs to Grand Master Yun for him to chose from and you can see which four made the cut.  We took a high resolution photo of Grand Master as the picture for the first window.  The second window we used the logo and the phone number for the school.  The third window we used a silhouette of a student doing a flying side kick along with the Korean characters spelling out Tae Kwon Do.  The four window is a Master instructor doing a high rising side kick.  The colors behind the images come from the International Tae Kwon Do Federation.

When it came time to print the designs, we printed on 60/40 perforated vinyl. The 60/40 means that 60 of the vinyl is there with 40% removed creating holes in the materials.  Because the windows face the south and will have maximum sun exposure, we decided to laminate the prints.  This will make sure that the colors don’t fade over the years. The down side is that when the vinyl does fail, it will be because the laminate shrunk.  All laminates shrink over years, whether your vendor is telling you that or not.  Any time you place two dissimilar products (perforated vinyl and laminate) you have different rates of expansion and contraction.  Over years, this difference will cause the print to peel. There is nothing that can be done to prevent this other than not laminating the print.  If you chose to not laminate the print, the odds of the print fading over years is much higher.  The normal life of a window print like this is about two years.  This one is now going on 5 years and still looks great.
