Hi everyone! If you’d like to take part in this year’s Prompt Party Week, just select any of the prompts from the list below and write a fic, make a video or create some art based on it. Please note that more than one person may choose the same prompt.

You may submit new stories or include the prompts in any of your existing verses (though all your entries must be posted for the first time during Prompt Party Week).

Art/Video makers may use any of the prompts, but there are some Art/Video specific ones at the bottom of the post.

I have condensed some of the prompts that were a little too long and removed some that felt repetitive or have been sent before… feel free to take some liberties with some of the more specific prompts!

Prompt number: 62, 194 Entry Day: Sunday

It starts with a glance – then a second, and a third. She does not notice him, immersed in an oil painting that seems to him a direct rip off of The Last Supper, but he cares little about the story behind the work; it is the woman who draws his attention, she in a soft cashmere sweater, dark hair twisted up, with a beautiful sadness about her.

He has seen beauty in both art and in his bed, but it is more than her beauty that captivates him, as much as she is attractive, for there are many who are beautiful, existing only with an emptiness behind the glamour. They are nothing but pretty masks on display. No, it is something that runs deeper, invisible to the human eye, yet apparent to the spirit. Perhaps it is the cloak of sadness she wears, within her a sense of loss, a heaviness the earth groans with when the world is asleep.

He does not know what it is, but it sends a jolt to his heart, and before he knows it, he has his sketchbook in hand, his pencil flying over the page. A quick sketch of the shape of her face, the key features, mentally measuring distances, lengths, and widths. His hand works as quick as his mind does, as if aware of the urgency, of time ticking by, that she would be gone, and he would lose that which he feels so strongly in his heart.

He finishes the first layer of shading, and when he looks up, his pencil stills.

She is watching him, her eyes dark pools of unfathomable depths he would willingly drown in. He knows he ought to apologize for crossing boundaries and explain he isn’t some creep who goes around targeting women for sick pleasure, but the words seem to have lodged in his throat.

Or perhaps his heart has.

“I’m—” His voice cracks. His face heats up, and he clears his throat. “I must apologize,” he says, and there is a strange feeling growing, a sense of déjà vu, as if he has seen this woman before, until it becomes impossible to ignore the tugging within him. “I hope you don’t mind my asking,” he says, selecting his words carefully, conscious that she still has not spoken. “But have we met before?”

Something in her eyes flickers. She drops her gaze, as if hiding secrets that dwell within. “No,” she says, quiet.

Of course they haven’t, he would’ve remembered if they did, but he had felt such certainty. The strength of that belief had been as steady as the beating of his heart. The taste of bitterness is strong, and disappointment sinks deep. He looks at her. She is fiddling with her gloves, and there is that heavy, heavy sadness, and he finds himself wishing he knows what it is that causes her pain, then wishing he could help ease her unhappiness.

“Here,” he says, offering his sketchbook. “You should have it.”

“Would you like to finish it?” she asks, and he is surprised.

“You don’t mind?” he ventures.

She looks at him. “No.”

She is stunning, and he is breathless, and once more, he feels that connection between them, that is to his mind illogical, yet he feels it, and it is alive in his soul.

“Would you, perhaps, like to go for a drink?” he asks, tentative. “That is, after, for…this,” he gestures vaguely at his sketch.

He has not bought anyone a drink in years, not since art school, having lost interest in the chase a long time ago, but there’s something about her that draws him in, and he knows, almost frighteningly so, that they are meant to be. If she is unwilling, he would accept her answer (he hopes it is possible), but she raises her gaze, and he imagines the sadness in her eyes has lifted just a little, and when she nods, his heart leaps, and he smiles.

Marian’s Lie: 3/3

For Day Seven (Sunday) of @oqpromptparty.

#112:  Regina visits Marian’s grave to thank her.

Regina always loved fall the best. It wasn’t too warm, it wasn’t too cold. It was the time for all things apples, her favorite fruit. The kids got to pick out their Halloween costumes and the older teenagers got ready for homecoming. It was when her farm was the busiest, but she loved that time. As a kid, her father would let her help package up the preserves and drinks. When she got older, her favorite thing was working the cider booth on the weekends.

With the colorful leaves blowing circles around her feet, she made her way through the cemetery. She had already left flowers on her parents’ graves, but they weren’t who she was there to visit. No, she made her way to the giant oak tree that provided shade to her best friend’s headstone.

Marian Marie Locksley

Wife. Mother. Friend.

“Hey Marian,” she said. “I know I haven’t been here in a while…not since Henry and I moved back to town.”

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 3 years since that day, 3 years since she sat in Robin’s kitchen…3 years since the truth was discovered.

“I need you to know that I’m not mad at you anymore.” She couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s weird because you probably never even knew that I was, who knows if you can even hear me?”

Yet, somehow talking to the dead brought her healing, it brought her peace. She wasn’t sure if there was an afterlife, but she sure hoped so. A chance to be reunited with everyone you lost, it was idyllic, even for someone like Regina who wasn’t religious.

“I guess I’ll never know why you did what you did. That’s the reality of real life, no T.V drama. There’s no letters with deathbed confessions, no chance at closure. I like to think that you were just tired of always being so selfless.” She softly smiled. “You were, you were so selfless. I can’t ever remember a time when you didn’t give your all to me, to everyone you knew. When you were younger, it was your friends. Once you got married, it was Robin and Roland. They became your everything. You gave everything you had.”

She let out a deep breath, adjusting the tiny bundle of blankets in her arms.

“So, for once, you did something for yourself. You went after the boy that you loved, you allowed yourself to be happy. And given how your story ended…I’m glad you died with them surrounding you. It gave me a chance to find the start of my own happy ending, Henry. I wouldn’t trade him for the world. So, maybe you lied, but I know you didn’t do it to hurt us. Regina knelt in front of her grave, adjusting the beanie on her daughter’s head.

“This is Sawyer, Sawyer Isabelle Locksley. The boys love her. I thought Roland would be upset about not being the baby anymore, but he just adores his baby sister. I promise you, I love him just as much as I love Henry and Sawyer.” She smiled a bit. “When you died, I promised to take care of your boys and I still am. I always will, just probably not in a way that either of us ever thought.”

She placed a single white rose on the grave, carefully stroking the letters.

“I love you, Marian, and I miss you.”

Regina and Sawyer headed home, back to the farm. The boys chased each other around in the front yard, yelling their hellos as she walked up the porch and into the house. Robin came over from the window where he had been watching their sons, sharing a small smile with her.

“How was it?”

“It was good, it really helped to talk to her, to get all that off my chest.”

“Good.” He pecked her lips and then smiled down at their daughter. “You know after Marian died, I never pictured I could be this happy.”

“Me either.” Regina leaned into him. “We’ve got our own little family now.”

OQ Prompt Party 2018 -- #16

Sunday’s (and final) contribution for @oqpromptparty.

Prompt 16. No one dies and everything ends happy.

In which I write the fluffiest fic I ever wrote and answer a years-old challenge from @repellomuggletum15 and @starscythe to write something without a smidgen of angst.

“I do.”

The words feel surreal as they leave her throat, as though they don’t belong to her, Regina Mills, former Evil Queen and once, years ago now, a villain.

For the longest time, she believed redemption wasn’t in the cards for her. She thought that was her curse. All magic comes with a price, after all. To find herself here, after everything she’s done, exchanging rings and vows with the soulmate she’d long ago run from, is nothing short of extraordinary.

Standing tall — she can hardly believe how much he’s grown — next to Robin is her son, her (not so) little prince and she can’t help but glance at him, warmth spreading through her chest at the look of pride in his eyes. Their relationship, estranged when his biological mother came back to town, has evolved into a deep understanding of one another and a fervent need to defend each other at every obstacle. She wouldn’t be here today without his help, his belief and his blessing.

She mouths a silent thank you in his direction as Robin slides the ring in place on her left finger, bringing her attention back to him. His gaze is filled with love and adoration for her, the same devotion he’s shown for years, despite the danger, the hurdles and complications, and the occasional bouts of anger she’s thrown at him. He’s still here, standing by her side, the way he promised he would be when he proposed.

Together, he’d said, and here they are, in front of friends and family, making that same promise again.

Laughter bubbles out of Regina as she stares into his eyes, this amount of happiness overwhelming. As someone who’s mostly known pain and suffering all her life, she doesn’t know what to do with the joy that spills out of her every pore.

This room is filled with people who once hated her, citizens who trembled in fear when she walked into a room, now witnessing one of the most important days of her life. Snow White, the child who ruined her life, stands next to her in her maid of honour gown, watching her formal enemy unite her life to a thief who’d renounced every noble title his family owned.

Cora is assuredly rolling in her grave.

For once — finally — Regina doesn’t care.

She’s giddy with anticipation.

Robin’s expression matches her own, his grin as wide as hers as Archie says, “You may seal this union with a kiss.”

Oh, how they do.

Prompt Number: 136 Entry Day: Saturday

Flashes of white brilliance, jagged and blinding, split the darkness. Wheels slosh through muddy puddles as sheets of rain mar his vision, soaking him to the bone. He sees her, a vague figure in the downpour, and swerves, skidding on slippery ground and crashing into a ditch.

“Watch where you’re going,” she says as she offers a hand to help him up.

Wet roads reflecting a myriad of colours, changing lights in traffic and flickering neon signs in the city. They escape the cacophony of the bar into the night, where the last raindrops drizzle from evening skies, little cold kisses that splatter on his skin. She twirls and dances and presses him hard against the wall of a back alley, melding her lips to his, and she tastes of honey, spice, and the promise of things to come.

Sunlight glistens in the forest a thousand shades of green, the air heavy with humidity. She is softness in his arms, and slick and tight around him. She tugs his hair at the nape of his neck and cries his name as he takes her over the edge. In the golden rays of late afternoon, shimmering through cracks in the foliage, a tropical shower arrives unexpected, washing them clean, and he laughs as droplets of warm rain fall upon their nakedness.

Constellations high above on black canvas, a sky scattered with stars. She is the moon, and he, the tide caught in her gravitational pull. They tread powdery sand beneath their feet, thunder rumbling in the darkness far out at sea. He carves his words on the beach, kneeling before her, in his hand a diamond like those etched overhead.

“Yes,” she says as the storm breaks, and he thinks he will drown in happiness.

Rain clouds amass over the city, drab and dreary as the inside of the hospital. It is not her, he thinks, this is not how she is. She is vibrant, and full of fire, and he brings in her favourite colours; a mix of red roses, silver brunia, and sweet william. She gives him a ghost of a smile, a rarity since the illness, and turns her face to the window. Thunder cracks as the dam breaks, and there is wetness on his cheeks.

“It’s raining,” she says.

10 Years Later

The day they graduated high school Robin Locksely broke Regina’s Mills heart. 10 years later and it’s still his biggest regret. He’s thought of her everyday since but now it’s time for their high school reunion. Regina Mills is back in town and Robin has one chance to undo the worst mistake he’s ever made.

She looked good.

Better than he remembered, she took his breath away at first glance, nostalgia and regret sweeping over him the second he caught sight of her.

When David suggested that they host the first night of the high school reunion Robin’s first instinct was to roll his eyes. He knew it was coming up - the ten year anniversary of their graduation - but he hadn’t planned on celebrating or even attending the reunion everyone seemed so intent on shoving down his throat. It just seemed like a waste of time or money to commemorate something so arbitrary. Despite the fact that events would be taking place all over town for the weekend, he hadn’t even planned on going.

That was until he realized that it might be his only chance to see her again.

So he caved and let David and his wife take over the Golden Arrow for the night. It wasn’t as if the old bar couldn’t use a boost. A night of drunk high school alumni could be just what he needed, financially speaking.

The reunion kick-off had started at seven. By 7:30 the place was filled wall to wall with former Storybrooke High grads. Honestly, he was a little surprised by the turn out. He’d expected for most of his old classmates to blow this off but even from behind the bar he could see face after face, all familiar, trailing into his family’s bar, most of them joking about how they could actually use their real ID’s this time.

The atmosphere was joyful, all around people were reminiscing about the past, marveling at the changes they’d made since then. He saw people he hadn’t seen in years, looking thinner or fatter, in love, with children or well-traveled. Some of them looked lonely or disappointed but those were ones filling up at the bar so he wouldn’t begrudge them their regrets. It’s not like he didn’t have a few of his own.

He hadn’t expected her to show. He’d wanted her to, hoped she would but he didn’t expect it.

Then her heard that laugh.

That deep, fluttering giggle he’d recognize anywhere.

OQ PROMPT PARTY

Prompt Number: 207

Entry Day: Friday 

“Robin is my soulmate.”

“Robin is my soulmate.”

“Robin is my soulmate.”

I kept repeating those four words, hoping that I would finally be free of the weight that they held, but each time that I said them, their meaning became heavier. I could feel them dragging me down with every diamond on my finger and every seam on my white dress, because I knew what the words meant, and perhaps I knew their definition all too well. They meant that I should have loved Robin, and that he was more than an escape from the loneliness that was threatening to be the one that I was vowed to instead of him. The words told me that I should not have to learn to love Robin, but that he was my soulmate and that love should come naturally, and so I waited, but it never came.  

So, I stood in front of the mirror, repeating those same words until I became unaware that they were even leaving my mouth. As, I stared at the person reflecting from my body… a person that in less than a year had found her soulmate, accepted his proposal, and was now wearing a gown to signify an acceptance of the love that she was offered. I realized that in that entire year I had not spent it falling in love with a man who I was to marry, but I had instead tried to convince myself that for once I should follow the rules. I was predestined to love Robin, and why should I tempt fate again? Why should I not follow the path that had been laid out before me?

It was those questions that kept me from running no matter how much I desired to do so. It was what brought me to invite guests that I did not even know the names of, and clothe myself in a white dress, but that was not what was keeping me from descending the stairs and showing everyone that true love was real even if it was disguised as soulmates who had both be given a contract by fate and signed by destiny. Though, I wanted to believe that my issues with Robin lied completely with the lack of love I had for him, but it was not the truth. In reality, I could not bring myself from the past, it was one of my most fatal characteristics; my inability to let something go.

So, now I was upstairs trying to convince myself that my mother was still in her grave and not waiting around the corner for my entrance into the wedding. As well as trying to escape the part of my mind that was telling me that I was still a teenager; trapped into marrying the King, because it was planned to be so. I should have been able to believe that this was different and that I had a choice; that a life with Robin was freedom, but the white walls around me were turning into castle stone and the idea that this time was different, because Robin is my soulmate and he was not the King, was becoming a dull lie that I was continually telling myself.

However, my anguished thoughts were broken by the sound of Snow’s knocking and warning that the ceremony was about to begin. I almost expected her to enter through my doorway without asking, but when I heard her footsteps fall against the heavy hardwood of the stairs… I knew that she would not be coming back. Instead, it was Henry who had let himself into my bedroom, and I could only bring myself to wonder how I never heard the door open.

He lingered a few moments before he spoke.

“Mom…You know, that you are making that face right?”

“What face?”

“The face that you would make before you would agree to let me have take-out when you always insisted on how unhealthy it was. It is the same one that you would make on the days when you would let me have dessert before dinner, even though you knew that I would not eat anything else after that. Mom, you are making the face that says that you are giving in just so that you don’t have to fight anymore…the one that says that you are going to let something be what it is, because there are other things to worry about. I know you mom, and I want you to know that sometimes it is okay to fight the rules…it is okay to fight even when not fighting is so much easier, despite how bad it makes you feel.”

Henry turned and left from the room, before I even had a chance to comprehend the words that he had said, but when I did I knew he saw something that I did not. Perhaps, it was because of the way I had invited guests when I did not even know their name or how the wedding was detailed in décor that I never would have picked, but Robin loved. I don’t know how Henry knew, but I knew that he was not ignorant and I was not naïve. I was married to the King because of fate, and I was marrying Robin, because of green colored destiny and black ink. However, it was what we both knew what was important; that both times the rings were not a symbolism of the love we shared, but of the chain that linked his ring to mine.

I can remember the first time that I met Robin. It was in the forest of all places, and I believe that was where the problem began. It was the nostalgia of it all; the Enchanted Forest, the stables, and Daniel…it always came back to Daniel. It was mainly the way that Robin held himself that reminded me of Daniel; his determination to not let anything scare him…even myself. So, I held on to Robin. In the same way that I held on to the fantasy of the family that I should have had with Henry and Daniel, but I was only fooling myself, because while I held on to Robin for those reasons they did not stand by themselves. I had found a safety net in Robin; a way to get away from being the only one that was not a part of a couple because he was the first person after Daniel that loved me and I knew that after him there would be no one else…he was my last chance.

So, I planned an entire wedding in three months, and I told myself that there was no reason to wait, because if I was destined to be with Robin then it was an unquestionable decision. Only this time I hoped that Snow would chose to ruin it…that her loose lips would perform a dramatic act, but they stayed behind the curtain…hiding between the choice of wedding colors and flower arrangements. I let her coordinate the entire thing, because I could not relinquish the similarities of the past. I could not see Robin without seeing the King, and Roland without Snow. They all saw me as a hero; as a person that would complete their family. I was to become a mother to Roland just as I was to be to Snow; and Robin wanted me because he saw that was a replacement for the wife he had lost just as the King had.

How was I supposed to ignore the parallels? How was I to believe that this would be different all because they were two separate people? How was I expected to carry on like I was not expecting my mother to rise from her grave, and criticize my choices? I did not know how I was do that, just as I did not believe that I wanted too.

However, despite my hesitation I found myself walking down the aisle to meet my soulmate…those eight letters were more despised by myself than anyone would ever know. Finally, when I was facing Robin; I could not bring myself to look at him for the fear that I would not see him. As we stood there I could have sworn that I heard my mother was behind me saying “Lift your head. You are lady, hide your face”. To anyone else the statement would have sounded contradictory, but I knew what she was saying…she meant that no matter what happens they don’t have to see your face…they can see the mask that you cover it with. So, I stopped feeling anything, it was all the emotions that I felt before…the veil, the crowd, the music, and the false love that lingered between the two of the us standing at the alter…it was all the same. I was wearing those emotions the same way that someone would wear an old piece of clothing that had been forgotten in the back of the closet.  

As, I stood there I could hear Robin’s vows, but I could never bring myself to listen to them. All I could wonder about was the eight letters that was binding us together. Was I bound to this man, because of those eight letters? Was this the only option for me?

“Regina, if you will have me as your husband I shall never take it for granted, because without you I have no future. How could I if you are not there…you are my future…you are everything to me.”

I could not bring myself to speak. A ring and eight letters. That is the only thought that I had. I just wanted to forget them, but they repeated themselves over and over as if they were rooting themselves in my brain for the times when I would question the validly of our love. Regina, remember the ring and the eight letters. Remember them!

No one in the crowd suspected anything of my unresponsive silence and I suppose that they would not, have, because to them I was only overcome with emotion. They believe that true love had impaired my ability to find my voice properly.  It was something that was expected…something that they saw no flaw in.  

So, I stood there trying to find the sound of my voice and formulate the words that I needed to tell him, but Henry’s voice was the one that drawled from out in audience.

“ Are we going to let this happen? You guys are all heroes! People that save others from misery and you are seriously going to let this happen! Robin can’t you tell that she does not love you? Are you that blind?

I found Henry’s eyes and pleaded for him to stop…begging him to just let things be, but true to himself he continued.

“ Mom… please don’t do this. You don’t love him. You love the thought of him, but you don’t love him.”

Henry was only looking at me now…nothing else around him mattered, and when he walked to where I was at he never broke eye contact. He was whispering now.

“Mom. You don’t have to do this…sometimes it is okay to fight. You can choose yourself, you don’t have to choose Robin. Please don’t make yourself miserable, because you don’t want to be alone. What good is that? Won’t you feel alone anyway? Plus, you let grandma decorate this entire place, now if that is not a red flag then I don’t know what is.”

I just held him for a moment before I was able to respond to the revelation that he had laid before me.

“It seems that you have inherited my dramatics.”

“Perhaps.”

Henry turned and walked back to his seat while leaving me with a choice. One that I should have made when I first met Robin, one that I never should have had to make.

Robin…you are not my future. You are not the man that I want to be with. You are just the one that I was told to love; years ago when we were both youn-

My sentence was cut short by the placement of the Robin’s hand over my mouth. I would have become angry, but he was simply smiling, and I was more confused than anything else.

Regina, do you honestly believed that I loved you? I slept with another woman who happened to be your sister as soon as I left you. I was marrying in hope that I would find a way to love you. I don’t know that I ever could have learn to love you, but I could have lived a life of trying. I love your sister. I never loved you. You have this entire thing backwards. I was the only future that you ever had, but you were never mine. Though, I would have taken it, and I believe that I would have enjoyed it. However, I must say that all of this should have been easy for you. Since, you were married to the King back in the Enchanted Forest…what a façade that was.

There it was. That was the truth that I was waiting to be told; the words that I knew needed to be spoken.

HEY!

It was Snow’s voice. Then, there was Charming and Emma pulling Robin away from me and dragging him out from my house. And there was Henry standing there waiting on me to say something…anything to reassure him that everything would be okay…that I would be okay.

“Mom.”

Henry’s voice. That what I was searching for…that is what I needed, because it belong to the only person that would ever truly love me. I knew that I would always have the Charming’s but Henry was the only one to love me even when he hated me and that was enough for me…that was all that mattered. He loved me with the truest love of all, because he saw my mistakes and anger and still he came back. So, I searched for him through the crowd that was emptying at Snow’s regal beckoning, but when I found him he was not the little boy that was standing in front of a hundred people demanding that they become the heroes that they were…he was my son. He was the child that ran into my room when he was scared and begged for five more minutes before bed each night. He was just Henry and I was his mother. There were no expectations…just the love of a parent and their child.

“Mom, why did you do all of this? If you never even loved him.”

“It was what you said… I loved the idea of him, but not Robin himself.”

“Promise me one thing, that from now own you choose things for yourself…not because of me or someone else’s belief that you have to follow some unspoken rules and especially not because of fate. Mom choose for yourself.”

“When did you grow up? How did you become this wise, my little prince?”

“Mom. I am serious.”

 “Baby, I know…I know, but this is not your problem to worry about. Let me take care of it. I love you for the fact that you care so much, but let’s worry about something else. Perhaps, the fact that you are an official Mills wedding crasher? Now, that is something that demands a celebration. So, how about we both go change our clothes and then go get some ice cream to celebrate.”

Once again, Henry’s childish behavior took over and left me alone with my thoughts as he got ready for the prospects of dessert in the afternoon.  I knew that later I would have to speak with Snow; she will want to make sure that I am fine, and if there is anything that she can do, but for now I was with Henry and everything else could wait. I finally realized that there was a reason that Henry did not want me to go to New York to find Robin. It was because he could see the white flag that I was carrying, something that I failed to know that I even possessed at the time, but he did. He knew that I had surrendered to the destiny that was created for me. So, he snatched the flag from my hand and pull me away from the guillotine that I was walking towards, just so that I could see that destiny was a prison and that fate held the key to lock me inside.

“Mom, let’s go! Granny is going to open up the diner for us! Now, we can get milkshakes!”

It was the excitement in Henry’s voice that I would have done anything for…that I would sacrifice my life for, and that is what true love is: sacrifice. I was willingly to change for him when he was a baby, because I knew that the person that I was before was not what he needed; I needed to be there for him and the only way to do that was to give up a life that was centered around myself. So, I fought for him…to give him an example of love that my mother never gave me, but today was different. Henry, fought for me; to show me that no one should be bound by eight letters that form a word that only means something if there is love woven into its spelling. Most of all, he fought for me to see that love is sacrifice, but is not meant to be loveless while sacrificial; that you should not sacrifice who you are just to find love in someone else and for them to find love in you.

Regina thought that maybe it was naïve to assume that Bryony didn’t carry any magic in her veins. After all, her biological mother was the Wicked Witch. Her birth had been sped up due to magical onion rings and heck, even while Zelena was pregnant with her, a lot of magic was at work.

Yet, Bryony wasn’t like Emma. She wasn’t the savior nor was she the product of true love. There was no way that she could be born with magic and she never showed any signs of it.

Until she was 16.

Bryony had always known she was adopted and she knew that her biological mother hadn’t been the nicest person. She had been spared the details of her conception, but it wasn’t hard to hide the fact that her mother was the real life counterpart to the witch from one of her favorite movies. (A movie she always watched in secret.) Yet, she also didn’t think that she had any magic within her. Sure, she had the ability to learn it, just like Regina had, but it would never come naturally.

Then, Ted Gunderson happened. He was the worst bully in her grade, always had to tear somebody down and thought that he was owed the world. So, it was no surprise when he decided to go after Bryony. She rebuffed him at first, gently. Then things got worse and he just couldn’t seem to leave her alone.

One day, she was in the locker room changing for lacrosse and felt odd, like she was being watched. A moment later, she caught Ted’s eye. Anger boiled up inside of her as she realized that he had just watched her undress. She was tired of him harassing her and getting away with it. She was going to go tell the coach, when suddenly she was taken over by a bright light.

When she came to, Ted was unconscious and had a cut on his forehead and everyone was staring at her. It took Bryony a few moments to realize that her hands were pulsating and that a fireball was quickly forming. Clenching her hands as she had seen her mother do before, it evaporated. Even so, she saw the fear in all their eyes and knew what she had to do.

Run.

Regina got the call just as Bryony ran past her and up the stairs. She tried going into her room, but Bryony refused. Robin came up the stairs and took in his wife’s face.

“What’s wrong?”

“Bryony has magic,” she whispered. “It came out today and she accidentally hurt someone.”

“Who?”

“Ted. I guess he was looking in the girls’ locker room and Bryony freaked out.”

Robin felt his muscles tighten. “But he shouldn’t be in the girls’ locker room in the first place.”

“I know that, and the school knows that. She’s not in trouble for what she did, Heaven knows in this town we have enough magical mistakes to fill a whole other storybook.”

“How’s Bryony doing?”

“I don’t know. She won’t talk to me about it.”

Robin frowned. “I never thought this could happen. Even with Zelena’s DNA…”

“We both should’ve known better. All of the stuff that went on during Zelena’s pregnancy…it’s a miracle that Bryony was okay when she came. What’s important is that we try to focus on how to fix this. I can teach her how to properly control her magic.”

He smiled, lacing his fingers through hers. “Thank you.”

“She’s my daughter, I’d do anything for her.”

Robin knocked on the door again, with no answer.

“Bry, please let us in,” he pleaded. “You’re not in trouble, we just want to talk to you.”

There was silence for a few moments and then padding on the carpet. The door opened and they finally got a glimpse of their daughter. Her blue eyes were now red and puffy, her arms folded over her chest, though Regina noted that she was hiding her hands in her armpits.

“I didn’t mean to hurt him,” she said.

“We know,” Regina replied, gently. “And we’re not mad at you. He’s been harassing you for months and you were really worked up, it makes sense.”

“Am I in trouble at school?”

“No. He is, though, for spying on you guys.”

“I didn’t…I didn’t want this.” Bryony still hid her hands. “I didn’t want to be like…her.”

“And you’re not.” Regina put her hand under Bryony’s chin so she was looking up at her. “Everyone who is new to magic makes a mistake like that, what matters is how you choose to control it. Which you can.”

“How?”

“By learning from one of the best.” Regina softly smiled. “You don’t have to learn everything, but I can teach you how to control your anger and keep things under control. Then if you wanna have a little fun, we definitely can.”

Bryony looked over at her father. “And you’re okay with this?”

“I love you, sweetheart,” he said, kissing the top of her head. “Every part of you. Magic can be a very beautiful thing. Don’t fear it, accept it. Maybe you can even use yours to help people.”

In the end, Bryony did learn how to use her magic for good. She didn’t have any more outburst and showed a lot of potential.

At the end of the day though, she preferred her bow and arrow to any old fireball.

Parenthood: A Dark!OQ Fic

Robin hadn’t thought that he wanted children. He understood that in the other version of him was a loving, devoted father to two beautiful children and that was honestly a shock to hear. When Regina had gone to make sure that Roland was well looked after, though, Robin found himself hoping that maybe he wasn’t. Maybe the two of them would have a chance to be parents.

Alas, Roland was fine. He had been adopted by two amazing mothers who loved and cared for him with everything they had. Tearing him from that, to drag him to a man that looked like his daddy-yet wasn’t-would just be confusing.

That night, for the first time since they had started their new relationship, Robin brought up children.

“I want a baby,” he told her long after she had blown out the candle and they had settled under the sheets.

There was a heavy silence that filled the room. “I can’t have children.”

“What?”

“I took an infertility potion when I was younger.” She cleared her throat. “I thought it was the one way to protect any child I had from my mother.”

“Oh.” He frowned. “Well…we could always adopt.”

“I did adopt. I had Henry.”

“Are you saying you don’t want more children?”

She was glad it was dark so he couldn’t see her vulnerability. “I’m saying that I always pictured having more than one child…I just think it’d have to be a special circumstance. Robin, I’ve just had to say goodbye to my son and find out the child that I once considered my own being raised by someone else. I know I’ll see Henry again someday, but it’s not the same. I just need some time.”

And that’s what he gave her. They were happy together. They stole from the rich and gave to the poor, they had sex in every room of her palace. His want for a child didn’t disappear, but he knew it would happen one day.

It was after a visit with Henry that she brought up the possibility of having another. Little did Robin know, but Henry had given he his blessing, telling her that it wasn’t replacing him. It was simply a second child. She told Robin that she wanted to talk about it again, to maybe start building that nursery.

However, like most things in Regina’s life, things didn’t go according to plan.

She awoke to the sounds of crying. They were faint, but very much real. Shaking Robin awake, they headed down to the steps of the palace and found a Moses basket there. Inside was a tiny baby, wailing and squirming. She bent down and picked it up while Robin read the note attached. A young woman in the village, one they had helped not long ago had just given birth and couldn’t provide for her son. She wanted them to care for him. After all, they had been so kind and selfless that day. What better parents could she ask for, for her child?

“He’s perfect,” Regina whispered, stroking his chubby cheek.

Her heart had cracked open for this child, just as it had the moment she first held Henry. Seeing this child, along with Henry’s blessing, made her know that it was okay to become a mother again. It was okay to love again. She was a mother to two amazing boys, one she shared with two other mothers. In that situation, she wouldn’t have it any other way. Here, this child is all hers. Well, hers and Robin’s, but she knows things will be different. Oh, how she can’t wait for this baby to meet his big brother, along with her other half.

When Robin held the child, he felt something inside of him that he never had before. For so much of his life, he could never see himself as a father. For so long, he had only thought about himself, then Regina. Suddenly, there was this child in his arms, a child that needed him and would depend on him, unwillingly. He knew that he couldn’t let him down. When Regina said that she could never get pregnant, he wondered if he could ever love a child that didn’t share his blood and yet, now he feels this protection…this love.

This was his son and no one could take that from him.

“He needs a name,” Regina said. “I honestly hadn’t expected that we’d get to name a child.”

“There was a knight I came across in my journeys, he helped me out more than he probably should’ve considering what I was like back then.” Robin looked up at her and gave her a soft smile. “His name was Thaddeus.”

“Thaddeus,” Regina repeated before smiling herself. “I like that. Prince Thaddeus, of the Enchanted Forest.”

Prompt Number: 60 Entry Day: Friday

VII.

A week has passed since the accident, and Regina’s magic does not return. She does not know when it will – if it will. She feels it like an emptiness inside her, as if part of her soul has been hollowed out. She no longer tries to seek out the spark; there is nothing but dead ashes.

She makes it clear she would see none of them except Snow and the royal physician, and only out of necessity. It rankles to ask for help, but she’s tired of the stench of sweat and blood on her unwashed body, and she’s liable to end up on the floor in a dead faint if she tries to take a bath on her own.

“Roland’s doing well,” Snow mentions as she helps Regina pull a fresh nightgown over her head. “Robin says his arm’s healing just fine.”

It does little to assuage her guilt.

She thinks often of the thief and the boy. She’d dreamed of him – Robin – the night before her fever had broken, as if he’d been in the room with her, but it couldn’t have been, not after what happened. What she wishes is a memory is only a fanciful daydream.

She pushes away her tray of untouched food, the smell of fatty deer meat causing her stomach to roil. She should’ve known things were too good to last. Everyone who comes close eventually ends up getting hurt. She has no right to demand them to stay. Even she does not want them to stay.

She doesn’t.

She struggles to her feet towards the balcony to the sweet scent of flowering trees, settling in the chair near the wall that would shield her from the wind. There she traces the pattern of blue veins along her wrist, studies the healing scars on her arm, and craves the relief that would wash over her if she would simply spill the pain locked within her. If only she could—

Someone raps on the door, and she pulls her fingers away from her skin with a start, scowling a moment later. She’s done nothing wrong by simple contemplation.

It is Robin who has come to visit. The scent of pine and earth clings to him the way the smell of baled hay in the stables reminds her of Daniel. Fresh pain wells up inside her, and she pushes away the thought, sealing it away along with memories that cause her nothing but grief.

“I apologize, milady,” he begins, breaking the silence. “I know you wished for no visitors.”

She stares straight ahead. She would not admit some part of her is comforted by his presence.

“Roland misses you,” he says. “He asks about you every day.”

She blinks at the unexpected prick of tears in her eyes, and even more surprisingly, at the flicker of anger his words bring about inside her, a flame that scorches her within. What does he expect by telling her how much his son desires to see her? Does he not know she causes harm to anyone who dares come near? Is he here to rub salt in her wounds?

She would not trust the well-being of her own son with someone like her.

“Regina,” he says, his voice catching, and why does it sound like he hurts for her?

She looks down to find her hands clenched into fists, nails digging into her palms. She lets out the breath she hadn’t known she’d been holding, releases it slowly, and unclenches her fists, leaving crescent marks on flesh.

“No one blames you for what happened, Regina.” His voice softens. “I don’t.”

Lies, a voice cries in her head. She’s seen the looks on his men’s faces, knows they think her responsible, and perhaps the accusations are well-deserved. How can she believe him when even she blames herself for what happened?

She jerks, takes in a shuddering breath. He hunkers down by her chair, concern in those beautiful eyes of his, blue like summer skies, the way Daniel’s were, and he lays a hand gently on her cheek, cupping her face. In her mind, thoughts spin wildly, of how he shouldn’t be doing this, and how she shouldn’t let him, but he does, and she does not wish for him to stop, though he’s a thief and she a queen. Has she ever truly cared for titles anyway?

“Regina,” he breathes.

He kisses her, tentatively first, his lips barely brushing hers, and she responds, moving against him, the soft pressure tantalizing, light, sweet. He kisses her and kisses her again, and it is laughable to think someone could ever love her, but she thinks he does, and an emotion long forgotten bubbles up inside her, quick and intense, and it both thrills and scares her, so much so that all the memories of having loved and lost – and the pain – come rushing back to the surface in an instant.

She pulls away abruptly, shaking and pressing herself against the back of the chair, trying to catch her breath, and does not know she is crying until he brushes his thumb against her tears.

“It’s all right,” he says as if he understands.

He steps back, giving her space, and she grips the arms of the chair to prevent herself from reaching out to him. She will not behave like a needy child. She will not act like one craving for attention and affection.

“It’s Roland’s birthday tomorrow.”

She looks up at him through wet lashes, fleetingly, half in shame for her tears.

“We would love for you to join us.”

He smiles, and it is soft and sweet, and she knows she will be there.

VIII.

Regina drags herself out of the chair and makes her way to the castle’s kitchen not far from the servants’ quarters, ignoring stares and whispers of “isn’t that the queen” and stops on the threshold of the arched doorway. By the roaring fire supplying heat in the cold kitchen, the old wolf sits in her rocking chair, knitting from a ball of teal yarn.

She pauses, resting her weight on the stone wall for support and trying not to seem like she needs it to hold herself up, when Granny speaks, “What is it you want?”

Her tone is not unfriendly, but it is not welcoming either.

Regina shuffles to the nearest table and sets down the tools she’s brought along with her: a rolled-up piece of parchment, an inkblot, and a quill – items she’d sourced from her room while lamenting the non-existence of technology and its convenience in the realm. Dipping the tip of the quill in ink, she sets it onto the parchment, scribbling her request before lifting the paper up for Granny to read.

The old lady raises her brows. “You want me to teach you to sew?”

Regina mentally rolls her eyes. Bending her head, she writes: A tunic. For Roland.

She hesitates.

Please, she adds, underlining the word.

Granny stares at her script for a long time. Regina shifts. The fire crackles.

“All right,” the old lady says. “But you follow my every instruction, you hear me?”

Regina nods.

“Good,” she grunts. “Now sit yourself down before you fall over.”

The first time Regina works with a needle and thread, she pricks herself, drawing blood, and Granny mutters disparagingly about how she ought to know better with her history with sleeping potions. She spends the rest of the day and the entire night in the kitchen with Granny insisting Regina position herself near the fire and every three to four hours put something – usually broth is all she can keep down – in her stomach (or else she would faint dead away).

Little by little, she pieces together the olive-green fabric, and at its collar, weaves in a simple pattern with gold thread. She finishes the tunic in the early hours of the morning with fingers aching and eyes gritty.

It is not perfect, she thinks as she looks at it, but perhaps it is good enough.

Granny looks over her work with a critical eye before gracing her with a gruff, “It will do for the boy.”

The noise of popping fireworks and explosions of colours in the dark sky of dawn give her direction, and as she approaches the Merry Men’s camp, anxiety creeps in, tightening her throat. She is not a talented seamstress. Such crafts are meant for those of lesser status, those who need to work for a living, and she never had to learn them, not when she always had the best provided for her and the best to offer with both money and magic at her fingertips.

She could gift Roland with riches and far better clothes, but what she has in her hands is worth more than anything else she can give to a child as dear to her as a son. They would not understand, and they would wonder how a queen would bestow such an inadequate gift to the boy. What would they think of her gift that seems utterly sub-par, a humble tunic with crooked stitches?

She falters in her steps, thinking it best to return to her chambers, when a boyish squeal cries out—

“Regina!”

A warm weight crashes into her, nearly knocking her over, and it is Roland who has an arm wrapped around her knees, his other forearm in a cast, which dampens her mood, but he is looking up at her with large brown eyes shining with gladness, and he’s chattering. 

“Did you see the fireworks, Regina?” He does a little jump, all delight and excitement, the grin wide on his face. “Someone came by with a tall hat and a long beard, and I told him it was my birthday, and he gave me fireworks!”

He speaks fast, some of his words jumbled up, but he is adorable, and she kneels, smiling at him.

They’re very pretty, Roland, she says.

He nods emphatically and drapes his good arm over her neck, almost shyly, so that she’d have to pick him up with her when she stands. But she remains on the ground, afraid to let him fall a second time.

“Roland, my lad,” she hears Robin call, and with him, two of his men.

She recognizes the taller one as the man who’d taken Roland from her. As if understanding her thoughts, though she’d not directed them to him, Roland tightens his arm around her, his little body pressing closer to hers. Robin stops in front of them with a grin, and she flushes, remembering his lips on hers, and that wonderful, terrible feeling rising within her. She drops her eyes to the ground.

“What did I tell you about running into the forest without letting someone know where you’re going?” Robin says, his voice stern as he talks to his son.

“I heard Regina,” Roland mumbles, his lower lip edging out.

She cannot help feeling sorry for the child (it is his birthday after all), and she hugs him, saying, I brought you a gift.

Roland brightens. “You did?”

She pretends the men aren’t watching her with Roland and shows him the tied-up bundle she’d carried with her. She tugs at the knot of the dark blue cloth of silk, her heart in her throat, conscious that that alone must cost more than the gift itself, but as she lets the fabric fall open to reveal the tunic she’d spent hours sewing, Roland – the sweet, precious, precious child – lights up as if she’d bequeathed to him an entire kingdom.

“It’s beautiful,” he exclaims in awe, picking it up with both hands, and then spinning around to show his father. “Papa, Papa, look what Regina gave me! Isn’t it beautiful?”

There are tears in her eyes, and when he returns to her, she tugs him close, and she whispers—

“Happy.”

It is rough and raspy and more air than sound, but she speaks, and she breathes, and she thinks of Roland with his unconditional trust, of Robin and him choosing to love her, and when she releases, “—birthday,” with a gasp, Roland breaks into a smile so bright it rivals the sun.

Robin’s Revenge: Part 6

#137: Henry worries about his mother and confides in Robin.

From the moment Regina had been placed on bedrest, everything in the house had shifted. Robin was picking up the slack and trying to balance the kids along with his business. Luckily, Mal and Will came over as much as they could to help out. Mary Margaret took the younger ones a lot and even John would try to convince Robin to forget about the bar and just relax.

But one person was working just as hard as Robin was and that was Henry. He had stopped hanging out with his friends after school and took on a lot of the chores, without even being asked. He helped the younger kids with their homework and tucked them into bed. If Robin had to dash to the bar at night, he’d make sure that everyone was okay. Despite both Robin and Regina telling him it wasn’t necessary, he didn’t seem to want to listen.

Robin knew that there had to be more going on. Henry seemed so stressed, he was taking on far too much responsibility, more than a child his age should. It wasn’t even necessary, with all the adults pitching in, everything was going to be okay.

So, when the kids were at yet another playdate at the Nolans, Robin decided to take Henry hiking. It was one of their favorite activities to do together and normally they had to do the easy trails because of everyone else, but that day, they could venture around as much as they wanted.

“Henry, I know you’ve been doing more than your fair share as of late,” Robin said after a half hour of walking in silence.

Henry shrugged. “It’s not a big deal.”

“It is. Bud, you don’t need to do all of this. You’re still a kid.”

“Yeah, but I’m just getting ready. In case…” He trailed off and shook his head. “Never mind.”

“No, talk to me.” He placed a hand on his arm. “What’s going on in that head of yours?”

Henry sighed, biting his lip. “When Mom was pregnant with Evie…or well, Bryony, I guess…she got sick. She had to go to the hospital and she delivered early. I remember overhearing my mom talking to Aunt Mal about getting her affairs in order…just in case.”

“I’m sure that was very scary for you.”

“It was. Then…she was okay. She was fine. And I thought it’d stay that way…until she got pregnant again. It’s not as bad as before, at least she gets to be on bedrest at home this time but…” He bit his lip. “I’m scared, again. What if something happens to her? The other day I found myself angry at this baby because it’s hurting her and that’s not fair to them, they can’t help it. If something happens to her…what if I can’t love this baby?”

Robin felt his heart sink his chest. Henry’s fears had been his own, way back when Marian was pregnant. She found out the pregnancy was high risk, that either she or Roland could die during any part of it. Yet, she soldiered on and in the end, it cost her, her life. When Robin got word, he was scared to hold Roland, scared that he would resent the newborn’s existence.

Yet, when he finally did, he saw nothing but his son. This precious baby boy was all he had left of his beautiful wife and he would protect him with all he had.

He also knew that Regina wasn’t Marian.

“Henry, the doctor told your mom this isn’t like last time,” Robin said. “Yes, she’s on bedrest and will need another C-Section, but the whole point is to avoid what did happen last time. She’s going to be okay, the baby is too.”

“How do you know that? Anything can happen.”

“You’re right, it can. It happened to my first wife.”

Henry frowned. “I forgot about that.”

“And it’s okay to be scared, to be afraid. I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t sure how I would handle Roland after Marian died. When I held him, though, I knew that he was my son. I knew that it wasn’t his fault and that he just needed me.”

“I’m still scared, Dad,” Henry whispered. “I love Roland, Bryony and Evie so much. I’m scared of not feeling the same with this baby.”

“You will. I know it, because you are a good boy, Henry. You have a huge heart and you’re rational. All these fears and the anxiety will go away once your mother has this baby, I promise.”

Henry was still skeptical and he would be until the day that Regina gave birth. She was healthy and so was the baby.

When Henry held his new little sibling, he felt stupid for ever being angry at them. Robin assured him that it was human and that it didn’t matter anymore. This baby would be loved and taken care of, just like the rest of the Locksley-Mills family.

OQ Prompt Party 2018 -- #7

Thursday’s contribution to @oqpromptparty.

Prompt 7. Robin makes three wishes.

Set during that episode which shall not be named. This got real angsty. I’m sorry.

One.

Robin is no selfish man. When faced with the end, he could have wished to undo it all, to preserve his life, or at the very least his memory, but instead he wishes for health and happiness for his children. Wishes for a good life for them, even if he won’t be around to witness it.

It’s the saddest part of all of this, isn’t it? He’s leaving behind children who are too young to understand the importance of his sacrifice. They won’t remember how much he loved them, how much he cared for the woman he gave his life for. His voice has been forever silenced, and the best he can hope for is for Regina to tell them when they’re old enough, the tale of his life and how in the end he did not die in vain. He’ll be their guardian angel, keeping an eye on all three of his loves.

He hopes they won’t grow up to resent him, that they’ll come to understand why he had to do it. He hopes his friends will too. His relationship with Regina had always been a contentious subject amongst his men, but this is where they are.

It’s too late to turn back.

Two.

He wishes for the last thing he sees to be her, alive and well, to know his death had purpose.

He turns around and there she is, horror and shock written all over her face, tears welling up in her eyes, and he hates that he’s done this to her, that he’s broken yet another promise. He’s hurt her again, even when he said he wouldn’t. 

She’s lost so many and so much, and now his name, added to the list of those who did not survive their encounter with The Queen. It breaks his heart to see her like this, but he has to believe she’ll be all right; it’s the only way he’ll ever find peace.

There are so many things he wishes he’d said. Time had gotten away from them. Their relationship, more so than any other time in his life, had been spent wishing for things that fate had seemed fit to put out of their reach.

She’s the strongest person he’s ever met. He regrets not telling her more often.

He looks at her now — truly looks at her, and reaches a hand towards her face. He doesn’t touch her — he’s too far gone for that — but he makes one last wish.

Three.

He wishes for this not to be the end.
