Luna seemed troubled after Noctis suggested going to bed to rest for tomorrow — it threw him off initially, then made him worry as he watched her struggle visibly. Yet as he was about to ask what was wrong, she told him that she wanted to tell him something. He gave a nod, trying to reassure her that whatever it was, it would be fine, that there would be no need for her to struggle this much, but he couldn’t shake the concerned expression off his face so easily.
He listened intently to what she had to say and his heart beat faster with every word added. Noctis was more than happy that it was him she asked out of all people ( like her brother, for example ) to accompany her on this long journey as her guardian. She was his dearest friend since they were kids, and it warmed his heart to hear she thought the same of him. It wasn’t that he didn’t know, it was just… nice to hear.
Her next words though… he didn’t expect to hear them from her. Sure, friendship was some kind of love as well, but there was something about the way she voiced it combined with the look on her face that made Noctis almost freeze in disbelief. Lips parted, but he didn’t know what to say.
He loved her, too. For quite some time now, he looked at her as more than just a childhood friend, and yet, he never dared to confess that he felt this way about her due to being scared of losing her or weirding her out or whatever stupid thing fear might’ve whispered into his ears. Just staying friends was more than alright with him too — it wouldn’t change how much he cared about her, and he wouldn’t ever stop supporting her and her dreams and being there for her when she needed it.
“Luna…”, Noctis finally said, though that seemed to be all. He was still a little unsure, for his mind told him she only meant she loved him as a dear friend, while his heart told him it was the same love he felt for her. He gazed into her eyes, hesitant and slowly lifting his hand to gently place it on her cheek. Thumb caressed the soft skin as he gave her a soft smile, then he pulled her into his embrace with the other, free arm that was previously around her back.
He still didn’t know what to say ( or maybe he was just too shy ), but he hoped his actions showed her that those feelings were mutual.
Her brother often told her that she wore her heart on her sleeve. It was always out of worry for his sister, hoping to shield her from the world’s harsh realities. Right now, however, she had her heart in her hands. She wasn’t bearing it for the rest of the world to see, it was just for Noctis. It was only ever for him.
The beating in her chest quickened, anxiety beginning to rear it’s head as she waited for him to respond. It felt as though the Fayth were slowing down time to purposefully torment her in this moment. Still, she held her gaze, hoping for some kind of sign that he understood what she meant. Understanding of what she was giving to him. She knew that there was the sliver of possibility that she could have been reading everything wrong. That maybe he wasn’t going to reciprocate these feelings that she’s presenting to him.
Being a Summoner meant many things, giving part of yourself to the rest of the world was one of them. There was little of a Summoner that didn’t belong to those they swore to save. One that they were able to keep safely locked away so that they may give it to whomever they deem fit. It was one of the things that her mother had taught her before disappearing.
And then he smiled. A touch to her cheek that brought on her own smile, her own hand lifting up to lightly touch the back of his. She wasn’t quite expecting the embrace (though admittedly she expected something a little different), but it was enough for her to know. Noctis always had a hard time expressing his feelings, so he did other things to convey them. This embrace was enough of an answer for her.
Though it wasn’t quite what she was looking for. Luna pulled back from the embrace just enough to take his face in both of her hands. She brought his face closer to hers before placing a soft kiss on his lips.
