something that is left out a lot in discussion of the themes and such of deltarune is tobys real life disability. consider why a disabled person may be telling a story about a complex relationship and desire for freedom

it's really interesting to me when people say a work of fiction "made an impact" on the trans community and then you look at the work in question and it just has a transgender person in it. and the work clearly isn't interested in political discussions or interrogating the role gender has in 1. various systems of oppression 2. the relationship between paternalism and imperialism/colonial ideology/fascism/the capitalist model of the family/etc 3. people's lives not being their own to choose. and what it is when you get down to it is, usually, a work that is only interested in internal struggle, of "cracking the egg" and experiencing some moment of divine realization that transforms you from the old, incorrect self into the new, fully-realized self. or otherwise the failure to do this which is almost always presented as a self-made tragedy. but regardless of specifics you almost always see "here is what being transgender means to me in a vacuum" and not "here is gender transition as the focal point of a larger theme", with no room for further interplay. these are works that make an "impact" only insofar as their role as a comfort object for transgender people in specific online niches to cling to, rather than actually saying anything materially, politically important. how should we be organizing? what does being transgender mean in a world where so many things are seemingly rigidly dictated by the conditions of your birth? what is the relationship between gender and class, race, disability, etc? but people don't make works that are interested in these problems, they're interested in saying "everything will be okay! you just need to transition!"
