Hello and welcome to my orangutan side-blog. I plan on using it for documenting things concerning the history of captive orangutans and as such not all the content will be pleasant. However it's my belief that we have a moral obligation to orangutans held in captivity, both living and dead, to remember these things.
"Few authors have shown interest in the thousands of great apes that reside in our zoos [. . .] they remain anonymous, moved from zoo to zoo and replaced in their cages, until— inexorably— they disappear. [. . .] These individual apes leave almost no trace of their existence beyond being mentioned in a studbook or, in less coldly administrative terms, in anecdotes such as those recounted by naturalists, zoo directors, biologists, or specialized writers." - Christ Herzfeld, Wattana: An Orangutan in Paris
This is my small contribution towards digging up those anecdotes and memorializing the lives of these orangutan individuals.
