if sex work was legal the workers could unionize
I am fully serious about this btw. not "pro sex work" as in "there are no issues whatsoever within the industry", but "pro sex work" as in "these are jobs and the workers should be a) allowed to work and b) protected from their customers by the law"
I did a good chunk of research into sex worker rights and the best legal approach looking at as many sex worker talks and articles as possible. As I found, more sex workers globally are arguing for decriminalization rather than legalization of their work.
There's currently four legal approaches: - Criminalization (self-explanatory, it is fully illegal) - Legalization (legalizing sex work) - The Nordic Model (criminalizing only buying of sex) - Decriminalization (sex work would not be a criminal offense)
Why sex workers have argued for decriminalization mainly is because legalization allows certain sex workers to fall through legal loop holes, making it harder for them to be protected by law because they have to meet standards the government sets. The Nordic model criminalizes the customer and therefore pushes the sex worker to place themselves into riskier scenarios in order to protect their client. I doubt I need to explain why criminalization is bad.
Anyway here's some sources and a sex worker led fundraising organization.
The latest on It's Time to Decriminalize Sex Work
This video explains the legalization of prostitution, explores the pros and cons, and reveals why decriminalization is the only solution.
Regardless, listen to sex workers. Here! Listen to them!
