The fact that Wanda and Vision were being represented as racialized others a whole decade before Wanda was confirmed to be Jewish Roma is like. It’ll make me crazy if I think about it for too long. For Wanda it’s bc she’s a mutant, but Vision also ends up existing outside the boundaries of whiteness bc he’s, y’know, a synthetic being who is naturally bright red like a cherry tomato; plus a lot of his story beats and his marginalization as an android draw direct parallels to being a racial other.

And then even beyond that, there’s also a queered element (that is still very racialized!) to their relationship where Wanda is repeatedly accused of being sexually deviant for being attracted to Vision, and Vision consistently has his gender status questioned because he can’t “really” be a man if he’s not a human being.

And as if that wasn’t enough, there’s a whole plot point about them literally being targeted by white supremacists spouting android-fearing versions of great replacement theory. They get driven out of their first neighborhood because someone sets their fucking house on fire. Like. I need to scream

Just me going on a brief anti w*ndav*sion rampage. On top of all the whitewashing and bastardized version of heritage where Marvel just cherry picked some nice comic throwbacks(that had no business being there), they made her entirely unsympathetic. Over and over again, she made horrible choices that directly affected other people and faced no repercussions. I know people say it’s her grief and possible mental illness, but that’s not an excuse. They just ruined her over and over again and fans are eating it up and praising it so much.

Now to get personal, my father was a Rromani( from Romanian, which is why I use the double r) man who dead when I was very young. I was cut off from every part of him. I am Jewish on my mother’s side but was never allowed to acknowledge that. My mom was convinced my best chance at life was presenting as an all American girl. I was desperate to learn about myself so much. So I devoured every Scarlet Witch comic and form of media there was growing up because it gave me a connection I did not have to my father’s culture. I was culturally isolated from my father’s community. Out of my respect to Rromani people having a closed culture, I worked hard not to overstep my bounds. So the character of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch was very important to me. Wanda and Pietro’s storylines were my first real exposure to the horrors, brutalizations, and oppression my father’s people faced and are still in full force today.

Marvel had a chance to showcase Wanda’s trauma/grief with her actual comic storylines without making her( again, a Jewish Rromani character with a Holocaust survivor for a father) as an “ I wanted to change the world” nazi white girl who grew up wanting to live the American dream.

So special shout out to L*zzie O*lsen for being a terrible racist who has stated in multiple interviews she was aware of Wanda’s race and culture and still decided to play the part. Shout out to her for her consistent use of the g*psy slur. Shout for to her for fighting to keep parts of the costume that were meant to represent comic Wanda’s heritage that she had no business wearing.

If you want some starting point on Rromani history, I would suggest “We are the Romani People” by Ian Hancock.

Also, look into the “Devouring”, which is the plight of Romani people during WW2.

‘it’s just trendy to hate on marvel’ no. marvel has done this to themselves. they overwork underpaid and non unionized vfx artists, they don’t allow actors to have access to the full scripts, they gloat about continuity but don’t have consistency, very few of the writers care even slightly about the characters or the source material, and they have gone for quantity over quality / are overproducing their product to the point of consumer exhaust. they are a multi billion dollar creative monopoly that should be held accountable

Hi! I’m back from my hiatus!

Things got busier in terms of school, so the time available for me to read comics and engage in fandom decreased dramatically. However, I’ve found a comfortable schedule now, and have gotten back into the groove of things (sort of).
