This is my epidendrum jayandeii, taken down from the log mount. I’m not sure the log was a good place for this dude anyway, because he lost leaves on one cane, and looked dehydrated. In semi-hydroponic setup, he seems to have perked up. I see some new root growth, and the offshoot is taking off, at last.
Update on semi-hydro experiment: this is my mtssa shelob Tolkien oncidium. This is the most growth I've had out of any of the orchids I switched over... Although I haven't yet seen much of a negative impact. The jury is still out on this method and I think it will be probbaly a year at least until I fully realize the good or bad effect of this growing method.
Repotting day!
My semi-hydro supplies arrived yesterday! I've been soaking the PrimeAgra since about 3pm yesterday... first in distilled water with a bit of Epsom Salts, then right before bed I changed the water and added some kelp concentrate to induce rooting.
I'll post photos of the process later.
Even though it's really stressful on orchids, I love the repotting process. Mostly because I get to examine all the roots up close. I have five candidates I think I'm going to try moving to S/H today... the rest are either in bloom or in spike, so I don't want to mess with them. The others have begun to put out new roots so I think it's about the perfect time to switch them over.
Now, just to successfully do this without my two cats getting into everything!

Semi-hydroponic growing
I've been wanting to try growing in semi-hydroponic culture ever since I read about it here. I've been putting off ordering the supplies (growing medium, special pots, heat mat, etc) partially because I was broke and partially because none of my plants were ready for the move (ideally you want the orchids in active root growth before transplanting to a different culture so that the new roots can adapt to the new environment and support the plant as the old roots die off.) BUT I finally bit the bullet and ordered the stuff today, yay! I've been seeing the starts of root growths in several of my orchids (probably because I've been keeping my apartment warmer than it has been for the rest of the winter--tricked them into thinking it's spring, muaha!). Just wanted to mention that I'm SUPER EXCITED!
I'm only going to transfer a couple of plants at first, those that I think would hold up to the switch the best, since it is a rather drastic change. If I see good results, I'll move the rest over in time.
Of course, I'll document the entire process in photo form!
