Dear person reading this,
You made it through another year. You made it through the hard times and pain. You made it through all the times when you all you wanted to do was give up. You made it. You made it another year and I promise you can make it another year. I am SO proud of you.
I needed this.
The Queen and the Fallen |Closed|
Thain had remained calm in his cell, insisting to furious guards that it was really an honor to be treated with such regard. Even though he knew it could only make things worse, he wanted to get a reaction from them. Besides, he knew that they could kill him until he’d seen ‘the Queen’. Of course she wasn’t really a queen, but that was what everyone called her. And she might as well have been, the way she embraced her authority— parading around town in that slick car of hers. Ruling with an iron fist. Nothing was allowed to pass unless it had obtained her stamp of approval.
She claimed that she only wanted to make this country a better place. That her changes were only enacted to improve conditions for everyone. Thain felt their country had been better off when power changed hands every few years. So he’d stared a little resistance group that had quickly grown into a large group. Apparently there were a lot of people who felt their ‘queen’ didn’t quite deserve the title she wore.
Then, during a raid the previous night, things had gone south. The ruler was more savvy, they too careless and Thain had been captured. But still he remained calm. He was excited almost. it wasn’t everyday one met royalty, and he was determined to walk away.
So he stood tall, even when he was handcuffed, and roughly gagged. Didn’t lose his cool when he was once again led through narrow, sparsely decorated corridors, and when the grand double-doors opened, he met her icy gaze with contempt only rivaled by their own. He had drawn this situation out a million times, already new that they were rivals and this would be their standoff.
When the guards removed the gag and commanded him to kneel, he gazed calmly back. “No.”
He glared back up at the woman— she truly looked like the textbook ruler. Thain was flattered. “I never considered you much for theatrics. But I guess after my show last night, you had to up your game. Feeling insecure yet?”
"Kneel, prisoner." The guard repeated.
“No." Thain refused to look away from the woman on the throne. He would not break her gaze. And he would not allow her the honor of forcing him down.
The shadow of a smile flickered across her face-- more comparable to a throbbing vein than to actual amusement. Oh, how he irked her.
"You think your petty refusals will get you anywhere here in my hall? Make no mistake Thain. You are in my domain, under my control, and now under my thumb. My words are the only words that matter here, and my law the only one that shall prevail."
She stood, further distancing herself from him. This was how it was meant to be anyway.
In reality, they were quite similar. She saw it, in his eyes. In the way that he did things. One might say they were two sides of the same coin. She was simply the one on top. He the one too far down to realize he had already lost.
"Do you get enjoyment from leading people to their ruin? Or from thinking that you have any sort of meaningful influence? You promise people empty air, and ideas. You promise them something they can't possibly afford. And when you deliver it is always too little too late. How will they receive you, do you think, were I to throw you back to them?
"What will you promise them now? You can't give those mother's their sons and daughters back. You can't reunite the dead and imprisoned. How do you expect to meet their demands when you can't even escape your own event?"
She too had yet to break eye-contact. This was much more than a simple staring contest. She would not be the first to look away. She would crush him before he left. " ... That is where we differ. Unlike you, I have a way of ensuring my success. Always. Now, kneel."
She jerked her head at a guard behind the man. He unsheathed his nightstick, and swiftly cracked the man behind his kneecaps. Had it not been for the guards at either side, she was sure he would have crumpled.

"How long have you been there?"
"For a while. I prefer to stay quiet though. Nature, unlike humans, needs no reprimand. Not usually from me, anyway. So I can finally rest in peace for a moment, and simply enjoy myself. And the art of observation. How are you, Aerith? It’s been a long time since I’ve spoken to a spirit of Mother Nature." Li smiled at the goddess, pleased to have come across the old spirit.
Aerith’s eyes scanned over the woman. She was beautiful. Everything about her seemed to be so in place and composed which gave the Goddess a bit of an idea who exactly she was. Turning her body to face the other slowly, a small grin took over her features. So she was one who simply was a presence everywhere but wished to remain quiet? How relaxing. She certainly wasn’t a threat and that was enough for the young woman to trust her.
Sucking in a breath as her fingers fidgeted at the lose threads of her dress, she made sure to keep herself more presentable. Bare feet and dirt stains didn’t seem to suit anyone. Holding onto a small rose that had barely worked itself into a bud, Aerith watched the being.
"That, I suppose, is not a bad thing. But I have only been Mother Nature for a few centuries though. I guess what you do has made you quite busy." Her hand closed over the flower and once she opened it, it had vanished. She figured it be rude to hold onto such an object when speaking with a guest.
"As for myself, I am doing quite well. The oceans and trees bother me at night often complaining about their share of attention." She paused, placing a finger to her chin. "That sounds strange. How are you, though? I apologize but I do not know your name."
"Not nearly as strange as it might to another," Li smiled softly.
"Forgive me. I seem to be forgetting myself recently. My name is Order, although you may call me Li. Though I'm sure you've heard plenty of me. The way that Kaos loves to flirt with nature. Storms are exciting and grand, but sooner or later everything returns to something like this." She gestured to the peaceful area around them. The trees were rustling softly from a breeze that could hardly be felt, and the weak spring sunlight brought a glow to all the green peeking out around the two. "It's just that kind of reliability I love most about nature."
She turned her attention again back to the other being. It simply wasn't polite to remain too focused on other things when she had company. "I see you are no cleaner than when I last met you. Although I suppose it can't be helped. To answer your question, I'm doing quite well. A little overworked, speaking candidly. There is always so much to do, and never much time to rest. Not that I need it. But... it is nice to remove myself from it all once and a while.
"Of course, I'm sure you're familiar with the taxing quality of such work. Given the season. I'm sure you're just as busy, what with the plants. And that needy ocean of yours?"

“You know what I want.”
Put “You Know What I Want” in my askbox, and my muse will guess what your muse wants.
Li sighed. She was too polite to openly express irritation at being asked favors. But she was a very busy being, and did not appreciate being interrupted.
"Everybody wants something," he muttered, shuffling through her notes. "Isabelle, right? You’re friends with Kaos, crazy, seemingly open, but surprisingly enigmatic… to most. You want to know more about him, right? Things that he won’t talk about, or ignores, or just changes the subject on, without warning. Like you never asked him in the first place.
"I suppose I can see why you’d come to ask me, but what makes you think I will tell you? Furthermore, why is it so important to know? Trust me, the less involved you are with that being, the happier your existence will be. And longer."
"But… Kaos would never hurt..!" Isabelle’s voice faltered, memories flashing through her mind.
Burning. Screams. Fire. Sickening smell of death.
"… me…" She finished her sentence with the single word, pink eyes falling towards the ground as she seemed to deflate. Granted, she was fairly confident that the God wouldn’t willingly hurt her in any sort of way, but… She couldn’t help but remember that one time. That one time where she had seen a completely different side of him. The spirit wondered if Li knew of the incident, but quickly assured herself that she did. She must of.
"… I understand.." Isabelle continued, chewing her lip. "I… i know what you’re speaking of, and I won’t attempt to defend him in that aspect. I’m sure he must of caused you alot of trouble of the years..
"But… I know that the side of Kaos that he displays to me has to be genuine. I… I know what he’s capable of… Well… I know that he can cause a lot of destruction if he so wished it to be… but…"
What else could be said without it sounding like she was defending him? Order knew him much better than she could ever hope to, but she couldn’t match the hidden hostility to the brotherly face that Kaos always reserved for her. (And just for her.)
"… Um…." She swallowed. " I remember… one time Kaos told me about his… ‘human families’…?" She ventured a quick glance towards Li. "And… He said that… when the last of his ‘family’ was killed that… he went crazy…
"He wouldn’t advance on the subject, but…" Isabelle looked up pleading towards the Goddess. "… Do you know what happened?"
Order studied the spirit. It was unusual for Kaos to speak of such things as the humans he insisted upon fraternizing with. The results were often too painful and he felt them to intensely to ever give them up. What situation had occurred then to have made him confess such a transgression to this spirit?
"The thing about Kaos, darling, is that he always lies. He lies to his enemies, his families and his friends. The difference is why he lies.” She paused here, clasping her hands together and looking around. She had spent a long time with the other being, studying him and figuring out how he worked— just as she was sure he had done to her. She understood, factually the way he functioned, even if she could not understand why. The problem always came in explaining it to someone else. Where to start, and where to stop.
She looked back at the girl, fixing her with a soft gaze, almost pitying. "To his enemies, or those who he cares about little, he lies for fun. It's a game you see, of how far he can stretch the truth. To his friends he might also lie for fun, but he also lies for himself. Kaos is many things, and he would never be ashamed of his actions. I've come to the conclusion that he cannot be.
"However... he does sometimes regret the consequences of those actions, though they should not be parted. I do know what happened. The fact that he hasn't told you, would make it improper for me to share it, and I still believe that you would be happier not knowing. You've seen what he does. But if you insist upon knowing what happened, you can always find his handiwork in the history books.
"Look up the earthquake of 1906, although he's not responsible for the disaster itself. History has a tendency to dull the horrors of such events, but I can assure you, he is just as guilty as the one who moved the earth's crust for the devastation that was caused."
"I apologize for the way I've been acting."

"Oh… Oh no, It’s alright!"
Isabelle waved her hands in front of herself, as if that was a way to truly express feelings, smiling to Li for a moment.
"Um… I understand perfectly! Managing what you do much be really stressful at times…"
"N-No, please do not apologize." Isabelle protested, her cheeks flushing barely. "I… I was rather rude myself… asking such questions."
Their last conversation, Isabelle remembered, had been about Kaos, so she would of been surprised if Li didn’t get a little cross. It seemed as whenever either one spoke of the other, their moods would waver, the disdain and hatred clear in their expression and voice. It surprised her how they would hate each other so deeply…
"Um, uh…" Isabelle was snapped out of her thoughts upon realizing that Li had asked her a question, smile playing at her lips. "Um.. I’m doing well. A little busy myself, but, I’m sure you understand…
"I’ve missed you! Are you doing well?"
"You have? Is everything alright?" Li asked, her surprise evident in her tone. Beings usually only professed to missing her when things had gone awry. (She wasn’t exactly the best at making friends.)
"I've been well, although busy as ever. If this world ran itself it would run straight into the ground. But I believe we've already covered that. I wouldn't want to bore you with rehashing the details. How are you my dear? Any particular problem that I can help you with? If it's small I'm sure I can take care of it here and now, otherwise I might have to schedule it for the future, depending on the precedence.
"Of course, it's your well-being that matters most at this moment." she concluded, with nod and a gesture at the spirit.
