on jenoport, he’d found cassian staring at his blaster with tears on his face. K-2 had volunteered for a memory wipe in case cassian’s “continued dignity and service demanded it.”
You told me you would be different.

Bonus:
Cameron was practically hanging onto his every word as he gave her more insight on the possibilities that surrounded her in certain situations. “I think I’ve never been a fleer, but in some circumstances evacuating people is the best option. Safety of everyone on campus is priority one. I always try to remember that, no matter if fight is kicking in, flight sometimes may be best and once people are safe I can come back to fight.” Cameron nodded at his words, giving him a bit of a smile. “Your advice means a lot to me, so thank you for it. I believe I have so much to learn and I can learn from you.”
“Priorities,” he stressed, “usually it is going to be keeping people safe,” he said, “you could be the best fighter int he world but that will leave everyone else vulnerable or a liability. Chaos will kill people just as quickly as an actual attacker will, if you aren’t careful.” He was glad that the units here weren’t like the ones he’d worked as a Paladin, glad that no one else had the threat of watching people die for them hanging over their heads in the same way. “you’re a good guard,” he said, unsure of whether giving the praise, recieving it or her earnestness made him more uncomfortable, “everyone has things they can learn, if you’re lucky that will never go away.”
Lincoln chuckled. “I know, I think we all do, during the attacks there was not really a guard that was left unscathed and we all were guilty of hating being injured and wanting to get back as soon as possible, we have a good team. Thanks but don’t worry, last thing I want is having to go back to the crutches.”
A wave of bitterness crashed over Noah and settled deep in his stomach, just barely managing to stay off his face. There had been no reason for them all to get injured, no reason for them to be hung out to dry like that. No reason for them to be paying a price while the suits sat patting themselves on the back. “I trust you to be responsible about your training,” he said finally, “all of you have proven yourselves.”
“Well, let me introduce you to your biggest challenge.” Riley grinned, raised her hands as she posed. “Oh, always. That’s a motto for me. It’s like drinking. You don’t drink for the taste, you drink to go big.”
“It’s an honor,” Noah said smoothly, offering a grin that didn’t quite reach his eyes, “fair enough, I was never really one for going home anyway.”
“I’d have to say I believe it boss. Just seems far to real not to.” Ethan joked a bit. “Well, you should be out enjoying yourself as well. You were probably working twice as hard as the rest of us were.”
“Fair enough,” Noah said with a ghost of a smile, suddenly feeling quite old as he remembered a time when he’d convinced people he had enjoyed them. “I think I had enough down time at the last rehab facility,” he dismissed, “we can consider that my vacation.”

“Let’s just say it involved shaving… Oh God, nope. Can’t think about it.”
“...it was better if I didn’t.”
“Well, did you at least get a chance to enjoy yourself?” He questioned, figuring his boss didn’t do much to have fun at the event. “Yeah, I just wasn’t feeling the whole party scene and since I wasn’t on duty, I went off to have my own fun.”
“Believe it or not, I was never really one for parties where people are wearing masks,” Noah said with a shrug. Or parties with people he’d watch get tortured and continuously failed to protect. “I’m glad, after the past few months you should be enjoying yourself.”
“Thanks man, you know I’ve never been happier to be back at work, being on crutches sucked and I hated being on desk duty with all the paper work.”
“That’s something I understand far too well,” Noah said, a shadow passing over his eyes, “watch yourself off of the crutches, there’s nothing worse than thinking you’ve escaped bedrest only to put yourself back on it.”
