So if anyone else watched the first 2020 presidential debate, I’m sure you were as stressed as I was!
I’m not going to get into that here, because this is a music page. I am going to talk about how I’m finally going back to San Antonio since the COVID-19 pandemic! On Saturday, Dan Rohde will be heading down South to Pat Obrien’s in historic Downtown San Antonio. He’ll be doing to solo acoustic happy hour thing. It’s a favorite of his, because of the food, drinks, staff, and the customers. The staff is always friendly and fun. The customers are very engaging with requests. I think it may have something to do with being on vacation near the riverwalk. People are generally in a better mood. The food is classic New Orleans fare, and their claim to fame is the Hurricane. It features 4 ounces of Gold Rum and 4 ounces of Pat O’s Hurricane Mix!
All in all, it should be a fun afternoon!

Austin, Texas based band, Oreja, is joined by Megan Leonardo to jam on "The Middle" by Jimmy Eat World. The performance took place on the rooftop stage of The Blind Pig Pub which is located on 6th Street in Downtown Austin. Also known as "Dirty 6th," the strip is known for it's happy hours and night life. It was not unusual to see multiple bands playing at the same time on this historic street.
No Oreja gigs planned for this week, but Dan will still be out and about! On Friday, September 25th, catch him at Eurasia Sushi Bar & Seafood from 5:30pm-8:30pm! Last time was a lot of fun, and they had some of the freshest sushi I’ve ever had. The crowd was extremely receptive, as well!
On Saturday, Septmeber 26th, Dan will be at Kitchen on the Bend from 6pm-8pm. This classy restaurant/bar features hand-tossed, woodfire pizzas that they create from scratch right in front of you in the dining room! I played there last week on my birthday, and I enjoyed signature cocktails and pizza after my gig!
I will try to live stream both events on youtube. So be sure to hit that subscribe button & notification bell!
I will see you there!

Austin, Texas based band, Oreja, takes inspiration from Richard Cheese with this Disturbed & Amy Winehouse Mashup! Who knew you could put a lounge jazz version of "Down with the Sickness" with Valerie? The performance took place on the rooftop stage of The Blind Pig Pub which is located on 6th Street in Downtown Austin. Also known as "Dirty 6th," the strip is known for it's happy hours and night life. It was not unusual to see multiple bands playing at the same time on this historic street.
Live streaming was a touchy subject on Facebook last week. A new policy update revealed that users could no longer create a “music listening experience” in their videos and live streams. Violators were threatened with the video being deleted and a possible deletion of the user’s accounts, pages, and groups.
This was very harsh language and didn’t go into much detail of what exactly a listening experience was. During the pandemic many musicians took to live streaming as a way to continue to make money through Venmo, Paypal, or Cashapp tips. Would an independent artist singing cover songs in the apartment be on the chopping block?
I do know that the AI in Facebook’s software is extremely intelligent at detecting recorded & published music with a copyright. It will detect the part of a video and stream that violates the rules and mute the audio. Repeat offenders can risk suspension or deletion of their account.
So DJ’s and people that play FM radio or music streaming services in the background of their videos are the most at risk. I have yet to have the AI detect a cover song I was singing while playing guitar.
I was quick to react to this news before I had the whole story. I decided to do some live streaming on YouTube instead. If they find copyrighted music, they usually just throw an ad on top of the video to cover royalties and give you a slap on the wrist. I noticed relatively the same amount of viewers as my Facebook live streams, and I even am getting regular new subscribers to my YouTube channel! Since, I am not getting digital tips as often, the subscribers are very valuable to the growth of my band’s brand.
Facebook later released an updated statement on their October 1st change of policy. The “music listening experience” did not include live streaming bands at venues or musicians releasing videos/streams from their apartment using their own voice/instruments. As long as you don’t use a pre-recorded track, you’re in the clear.
This is a relief, but I also think it’s funny that they let the entire Facebook music community speculate their future for literally days. Who knows? Maybe the backlash of their update made them change their tune a bit.
All I know is I’m not sure if I will go back to streaming on Facebook yet. I’m seeing the same amount of viewers and gaining subscribers on You Tube. I would get likes, comments, and shares on Facebook Live, but not many of them turned into fan page likes or Spotify follows.
A music career is a long game, not a flash in the pan. It’s good to have loyal followers that will continue to support you over the years.

For today's Gear Porn Tuesday, we review one of the most awful pieces of audio gear I have ever bought! Sold by Walmart, the Surf Onn. USB Podcast Microphone has the worst audio quality I have ever heard. You can barely even say that what came out of that mic was audio. It sounded like someone banging trash can lids, while another person recorded the audio into an overdriven Line6 Spyder practice amp. Absolute garbage product. You get what you pay for. Spend a little more money on a quality USB microphone.

We had the pleasure to get interviewed over Zoom Video Chat Virtual Meeting Software for Over Easy with Coach. It's a daily morning talk radio show on KWVH Wimberley Valley Radio 94.3 FM! We usually drive over to Wimberley, Texas to do an in person interview and live studio performance, but unfortunately the COVID-19 orders kept us from doing so. We settled for a social distanced interview and playing pre-recorded tracks! We also played an unreleased track, "A Sharp New One." If you missed the show, then you're out of luck! You'll just have to wait until we release the single/video later on this fall.
