The Hindenburg, Halifax, NS 4th of July, 1936 It appeared to fly low over Halifax and the province in general but especially low over Shelburne, Chester and Hazel Hill. The airliner flew at an altitude of about 1000 feet, but due to its size the dirigible seemed to be just above the tree line. The Halifax Herald, 6 July 1936, p. 4, reported in bold print that it was possible that “those aboard the Hindenburg were taking pictures of Halifax and other places, for the files of the German air ministry”. Military authorities said photographs could easily be taken up to 10,000 feet and it would be impossible to prevent photographs from being taken.

Capitol Theater, Halifax, NS Taken soon after its opening on 31 October 1930. "From here we enter through a lych-gate into the paved castle court with its arched cloisters, battlemented towers and gabled turrets and half-timbered buildings, recalling the Old World atmosphere of a Mediaeval castle. This feeling is enhanced by the long mullioned windows filled with stained and leaded glass and illuminated from behind. Over the lower walls are seen the trees of the surrounding park with the blue sky overhead, across which float the evening clouds. The whole sky being illuminated by concealed cove lighting. Knights in armour stand guard at the arches, and the flag standard bears the cross of St. George." [The Halifax Mail, 31 October 1930, p. 21]

Photo taken following the Halifax Explosion of 1917. 400 people in this parish were killed - a tremendous toll. St Joseph's was rebuilt and celebrated its 140th anniversary in 2005. It was demolished in 2009. The site is to be redeveloped into condos.  Another piece of wonderful history and architecture lost.

Victory Parade, 2nd Boer War. Barrington Street, Halifax, NS, 1902 Parade Square's original entrance arch can be seen on the right, displaying 'Paaradeburg'. The battle of Paaradeburg, judged by British & Canadian casualties, became known as Bloody Sunday. It ended with a British/Canadian victory.
