What did Levi really say?

This topic is all over eruri twitter at the moment so I wanted to share it here. I’m not sure who to credit for pointing this out, so apologies in advance for that.

After Yelena tells Hange and Levi how the mindless titans have been ironically protecting Paradis from a Marley attack, Levi’s reply may be a reference to Erwin.

The top panel is the Japanese raw. The panel on the bottom left is from the amazon translation, the one on the right from manga stream:

Yelena: “The “pure titans” they unleashed here continue to make it difficult for them to make landfall, even with the latest and greatest weapons. While originally a policy meant to confine Eldians inside the walls, this now protects the Eldians from an advancing Marleyan army, ironically enough,”

Levi (Amazon): Yeah. Seems that way. Funny. Levi (Mangastream): Looks like it. That would’ve made him laugh.

Levi chided Erwin several times for his strange sense of humor. When I consider that as context, along with Levi’s sorrowful expression, I really do think Mangastream got this right. If so, it was a nice eruri moment the official translators missed.

So I went back to read the dialogue in question.

What Levi says in that panel is;

Rasiina (apparently/so I heard)

Soitsuwa (that is)

Waraeru (funny/laughable)

As a honest-to -goodness Japanese with almost half a century of manga reading experience, I don’t think he’s talking about Erwin. He’s simply stating that whole situation of titans being curse and blessing at the same time (so to speak) is so ironic, thus “funny”.

Sorry, all eruri people. He’s not being romantic here.

This is why I always wait to read the Crunchyroll (Amazon) scanlations when new chapters come out. No offense to fan translators because I’m sure they’re doing their best, but it is never as accurate...

I am bringing this here, since each month most of the spoilers originate and spread on tumblr in the first place, specially images.

This was written by a japanese fan last month, because of what happened when chapter 84 spoilers appeared. On that time, many japanese fans were accidentally spoiled by people who saw the spoilers here on tumblr, and went to twitter in a rush, using the spoilers as their icons and names.

The majority of japanese fans do not like to see spoilers. Like the text above says, they like to wait until the release date, buy the magazine, and then read it from there. They are usually very careful, and avoid following people who posts spoilers, they do not visit spoiler tags, etc. However, they cannot avoid seeing the spoilers if you use a spoiler as your icon or name. Because when you do that, and then go and favorite and retweet their tweets, or even follow them, the icon and name shows up on their notifications. They cannot avoid this on any way.

Days before the chapter was out in Japan, people were doing this with titan armin icons, dead erwin icons, names saying who got the serum, and similar very heavy spoiler stuff. Japanese fans were very upset by this and many of them made their profiles private, but still people who already were their followers, could keep spoiling them at any time, so they also started blocking people.

A month has passed and new spoilers will come out soon. Let’s not repeat this mistake again and let’s respect the japanese fandom. If you are on twitter, and you follow and interact with japanese fans, please do not use any spoiler as your icon or name before the magazine comes out in Japan on the 9th. Otherwise you will upset many snk fans and spoil them against their wishes, and you will probably find yourself wondering why suddenly your favorite artist blocked you on twitter.

Honestly, it’s not even just out of respect for the Japanese fans. I’m sure many Western fans like myself also dislike and avoid spoilers before the Crunchyroll release, and it is extensively difficult in these spaces to avoid them. I typically stop going on Tumblr at all during this period of days.
