long-winded thing abt reposting art
but only for me personally.
to elaborate, i draw fanart w the intent to spread headcanon propaganda ideas abt what i like, so the more channels it has to reach ppl the better. back in the day almost all of the fanart i was exposed to & inspired by was unsourced, so now i dont mind getting reposted cause its like the circle of life, and i know from having been on the other side that most of the time it's not that harmful. usually it's just peeps going 'hey this is cool'. or at worst 'this is bad'. nobody's gonna turn a profit from these low res jpegs, least of all me.
at the same time, i wouldnt be this cavalier if someone reposted my original & personal work-- and for a lot of artists, everything is personal. (and it goes w/o saying that reposting professional work is plain breaking the law). and it would be justifiably freaky not knowing who was looking at it.
anyway, what i suspect happens in a lot of tumblr repostings is that someone posts it to another platform like pinterest or 4chan, and then it gets posted back to tumblr in a weird cross-pollination, so that the person putting it back on tumblr isnt the first to blame
still, i honestly believe most ppl on this site are not flagrantly stupid or malicious, and that they can and want to share work ethically. for example, the recent crop of responses to pixiv repostings has been a little vigorous, but i think its good for reminding us that there are real human beings behind the artwork.
those human beings will vary in how they feel abt their work being shared. and i think its the duty of the content sharer to remember that even on the internet, human interactions are taking place, and that they should approach them with empathy and an inquisitive spirit.
as a dumb example-- someone once reposted something from my (defunct) dA here, but i had put my tumblr address in my profile, and a bit of legwork could have led them to the exact post. i didnt necessarily mind the reposting (they had linked my dA accnt), but i did wish they'd dug a little deeper with my stuff. so it wasnt about the art in the end-- it was the lack of attention.
so um......i guess i guess i lied. i do kIND of care. not necessarily abt my own fanart, but abt the relationship b/t posters and artists, and the attitude ppl have towards artwork in general. things can get a bit crabby on this site, but i genuinely think ppl can do better & respect each other and all that shiz
