Out of everything I’ve thus far created, the piece behind me titled is my absolute favorite & the one I feel the most connected to. representing a merging of form and idea, by two gay artists, separated by well over 40 years.
The models, captured by photographer Don Whitman in the 1960’s in Colorado, against my reinterpretation of Whitman’s work.
The blue & yellow are the epitome of the California vista, from the desert to the ocean.
And tell the tale of my own inner microcosm - a calm body of water driven by a deep vortex of fluctuating energy and emotions, constantly seeking out light, simplicity and peace. more about the series in this @kaltblut_magazine interview : some specs: “Westernmen” : 5x5 feet : mixed media art on Moab Entrada 300 fine art paper : floating in custom wooden frame

A couple of months ago I was approached by @westernphotographyguild to create a series of collages featuring the work of legendary physique photographer, Don Whitman. At the time I didn’t know much about Don or his work. but I was instantly drawn to the sensuality & beauty of his photographs. Don, who operated out of Colorado, lived at the time when being gay wasn’t as widely accepted as it is now, and I have so much respect for Don, and other pioneers like him, who were brave enough to create content that went against the “norm” of the day, and in a way stayed true to themselves. through conversations I had with Don’s nephew, Andy, who now operates his uncles estate, I got a glimpse into who Don was, and let me tell you, I fell in love. Don passed away in 1998, so he’ll never get to see these pieces I made in person, but I totally felt like his spirit was with me throughout my creative process. I hope that through my interpretation of his work, he’ll get to have the openly queer artistic expression that he never fully got. it’s been a true honor working on this series, and I’ve only just begun to scratch the surface, I’m constantly working on unearthing more work, and developing more negatives of Don’s fantastic work. A preview of the series was just released on @pornceptual and I encourage you to check it out - and give a BIG LIKE to Don’s work, to queerness and to self expression. A few pieces will be on display at an exhibit taking place the end of June, in L.A . And I will be curating a full exhibit of Don’s work along with the full “Mountain Man” series that i created later this fall - stay tuned.
