What gets me in this scene is how you can track the progression of his realizations — First, quickest, is ‘this ain’t right, danger sense going off, shit’s gon’ get real.  Second, is ‘this is planned well, too many people involved for this to start and end here.’  Third is, ‘I know most of these people in some way,  I’ve never really known any of these people, have I?’  And Fourth is a wordless realization that this has to go all the way through — top to bottom, end to end.  This is the reason why Fury showed him Insight, and then came to him when he was wounded.  This is the reason Fury’s been sending him on questionable, dirty missions.  This is where SHIELD’s mask cracks, its human skin peels off, and the skull underneath grins out.  

That fourth frame is where Steve realizes that he’s still at war.  Only this time, he’s alone.
