Person of Interest 5x10
ok so I felt the need to write this after seeing all the backlash since last night’s episode about the dead lesbian trope.
so first of all I’m seeing a lot of people commenting that don’t even watch the show or only watch the show for root x shaw, and they are all up in arms about the trope and another dead lesbian, but let’s back up for a sec. if you have watched the whole show, you would know that the first episode of person of interest is finch offering john the job and saying “hey you can take this job and save lives, but just so you know, it’s going to end in your death.” that’s literally how the show works and I’m sure that by the finale more main characters will die as well. there have been so many important character deaths on this show (all straight people/presumed straight people so far): carter, hersh, cole, lambert, elias, dominic, etc. also, the showrunners did an interview where the explained that this has been a plan for root’s character arc since season 2 (before they decided to jump on the root x shaw relationship bc they saw the chemistry between sarah and amy). they did not kill her off for no reason and she was not killed by some random stray bullet. root died protecting harold (the machine’s creator/father) bc she knows that finch being alive is more important than her being alive (going back to the beginning of the episode where she told finch that only he can activate the machine’s new self defense ability). root comes full circle from being a person who could not give a shit about human life and referred to people as “bad code” to giving her life to save finch. also, she is pretty much reincarnated as the machine by becoming the machine’s voice and personality. that is so important bc as she says throughout the whole episode, the machine knows them so well and even after all of their deaths they will be immortalized in the machine. so, all in all, I’d just like to say that even though I am sad that root is dead, I am so happy with the way the writer’s handled it.
