highly specific graphic t-shirts orpheus would have stuffed in his dresser in modern times
demigod/ chb orpheus? directed the camp musicals. did he suggest them? possibly. did he use the most gentle encouragement to get the nervous and awkward campers to try out? yes!
cont. from here for @evrydiki
eyes can't seem to leave her, hope that she'll look his way and not take offense to his observations keeping him in place. hands can't stay still, he's never been this nervous , shy yes, but orpheus has never felt his heart beat this fast this loud and oh god what if she hears ––– and then she looks and he can't help but smile. suddenly and almost frighteningly so, he feels like looking away is impossible. it dawns belately that he's staring, hasn't blinked, he can't be sure how much time has passed only that it must have.
he blinks, finally, a bit rapidly and a bit too much, a soft confusion settling. blinking again, he tilts his head. "i'm glad i did ––" too much tone it down –– " yes. i can't help it, ask anyone around here." there's no desire to lie, honesty coming almost too easily. "when i was younger, people would play a game to see how few questions i could ask. i never won." shoulders shrug and he doesn't sound bitter, just, how it is.
"may i ask another?" it's neither beg nor a plead but a gentle request. if she turns it down, he'll pack it up and go back to his work, but if she allows –– there are no less than ten that orpheus wants to ask, what's your name? are you hungry? have we met? why are you alone? choosing just one feels impossible.
he never truly doubts eurydice, he doubts himself. he doubts that he is worthy of her love, doubts that he could have actually won against a god. in his sudden solitude, without any idea of how long they've been walking and in total darkness, orpheus is human. he doesn't have the rocks and walls echoing his song, he doesn't have the workers rallying chorus, he doesn't have his audience and doesn't have his confidence. he is so painfully human in his darkest hour and how can anyone really expect a human to be infallible when even the gods fuck up.
no but it's the fact that in h.adestown when he turns it's directly after the line "the darkest night comes right before the dawn" and the name orpheus means darkest night. he was turning because e.urydice called his name and he wasn't going to ignore her again. he is not selfish in turning. countless retellings have him turn not out of doubt, whether it be she stumbles and he turns to help her or because he doesn't realize she hasn't stepped out yet and wants to celebrate believing she is right there or because she doesn't know the rules and thinks he is ignoring her and doesn't love her and he cannot take her anguish --- he turns out of love.
and that is how i will be playing him. thank u and goodnight.
i'm gonna watch some boots to further the brainrot for the silly soft boi. nobody laugh at me as i figure him out.
