Milonga del Ángel - Orquesta Z (2019)

The great Astor Piazzolla wrote Milonga del Ángel in 1984. Often recorded, this is our take of Yo-Yo Ma’s 1997 version with Kathryn Stott on his album “The Soul of Tango”.

Orquesta Z is a San Francisco non-profit formed in 2013, which performs classic Argentine tangos to modern and new compositions in order to spread the joy of this unique and beautiful, internationally-loved music and dance.

AMURADO was composed in by Pedro Laurenz and Pedro Maffia in 1927.  This version was recorded by the San Francisco-based tango sexteto Orquesta Z in 2011 in the manner of the Laurenz orchestra’s original 1940 record.

Watashi - Orquesta Z (2017) como Taro Wakase and Forever Tango (2001)

I arranged this piece for my San Francisco-based tango sextet Orquesta Z after watching a tango troupe perform to it last week:  Watashi, by violinist Taro Wakase, was originally composed in 1997, and performed by the Forever Tango Orquestra in 2001 in Osaka.

Gallo Ciego - Orquesta Z (16.07.28)

Gallo Ciego was composed in 1927 by Agustin Bardi, the music the actions of the Argentine children’s game of Blind Man’s Bluff known as “Blind Rooster”. The music was first recorded in 1927 by Canaro and later many more, including Tanturi in 1938.

We arranged this for our sextet topic Orquesta Z, in Berkeley, California in a version similar to Luis Brava’s 1998 Forever Tango version.

ADIÓS NONINO - Orquesta Z (2015) como Astor Piazzolla (1959)

While touring in Central America in 1959, Piazzolla heard of his dear father’s death, and went back to Manhattan and wrote this signature piece in honor of his father (whose grandchildren called fondly Nonino, the diminutive in Italian for Grandfather), taken from an earlier piece he wrote called “Nonino”.  But in this piece, you clearly hear the pain of his loss in the lyrical beauty of the melody.  With the loss of Orquesta Z’s leader’s mother earlier this month, this piece has never felt more immediate to us.
