This adorable Common Meadow Katydid decided to be a wonderful subject for my photography today. He was posted up on my bird feeder hanger and held very still to get his picture taken!
An online resource devoted to North American insects, spiders and their kin, offering identification, images, and information.

Orthopteran spotted!
Common True Katydid (Pterophylla camellifolia), female nymph, taken June 12, 2026, in Georgia, US
A huge katydid nymph sticking out against the white paint of a fence post like a sore...leaf? Katydids are always an exciting find, especially large ones, and this girl did not disappoint. She seems to have been just one molt from adulthood. At the top of the photo, you can see a light green sort of "tail" protruding from her abdomen which is her crazy-looking ovipositor! This species has a long, semicircle ovipositor that is very visible in females and a good identifying trait for the species. I can't imagine what possessed this individual to leave the safe haven of the trees and venture out onto a bright white fence post, but she was chilling!

my favorite Calliptamus barbarus morph is this monochrome oreo one, which unfortunately means it's also the one that stands still the least. i'm very grateful to this individual for being oblivious enough to allow me to get a decent look at it before remembering its entire purpose in life is to jump into a dense spiky bush and disappear forever

unlike his nearby relatives who are typically impossible to track down between the jumping, cryptic appearance, and general affinity for crevices, this wood cricket (Nemobius sylvestris) was out in the open, exploring the soil exposed by a recently fallen tree much like an old man that has to snoop around every local car crash
