lil things abt ness’ campaign/being Agent 4:
the artbook said something to the effect that “A4 was too busy with activities to know who tf the squid sisters were” and yeah that fits enough w ness lol. he had a lot of hobbies as a kid (most of them forced) and certainly doesn’t pay attention to celebrities in the first place.
that being said i feel like “how he learned about octo canyon” came from a somewhat-personal relationship with marie? see the next point.
his mom is a retired professional ink battler turned socialite so he grew up between training and party events. he’s adept at battling, plus his history in gymnastics, so he had a much higher base level of skill than soda EVER had.
i could imagine his mom introduced him to callie and marie, either in a tournament or otherwise---idk this part’s in development. i just think of them getting along like a house on fire fsr.
he was in boarding school during his campaign lmfao he bought ppl’s silence so he could sneak out in the middle of the night and complete the stages. (soda usually supervised him during these bc marie was....u know.......asleep.) (most of the time.)
idiot is a completionist and a showoff. he took the campaign as him starring in a video game, meta enough. the experience was miserable and he’d usually hurt himself trying to get all the scrolls, but he got em!
part of the reason he’s so protective of his privacy (to this day) is bc he had a lot more ppl to keep his campaign secret from---his headmaster and teachers and parents. (he didn’t have friends.)
he couldn’t afford to land himself in the hospital, so he learned to patch himself up. when people asked why he was so tired all the time he just told them he hadn’t been sleeping well. (also as a result he sleeps a lot a lot a lot these days.)
honestly, his being a ray didn’t impact it much. he’s mixed, so some species-related abilities come through and some don’t---he doesn’t have super developed biolum, but he doesn’t have electroreception, either (at least it’s so subtle he doesn’t notice unless he really focuses).
sometimes he short-circuited a few wires when he got slammed into them, looking at you octostomp, but he still largely relied on raw skill.
boy’s not a coward but he’s very sneaky.
that said, often his impulses betray his genuine capability---faced with that one tentakook in the one octobrush stage in Area 5 called “a brush with danger”, he didn’t bat an eye at killing it straightaway by trapping it with curling bombs.
