GOD'S OWN COUNTRY 2017 | dir. Francis Lee
johnny saxby in god’s own country really is like. i didn’t used to be this way but now i am. i’m all fucked up. i can’t look people in the eyes because it means they are looking at me and seeing me all fucked up. i’m so hardened to the world that i speak in half sentences and grunts. i’m too tall to get through the doorframe of my familial home. all i know is the cruelty of nature and how one day i will be a victim too and i secretly hope that day is soon. and if you kiss me. i will never be able to stop kissing you.

i think being a doctor or nurse is a lot like being a teacher in that, if youre not very careful, it cultivates in you this really terrible attitude towards the people you interact with all day, an attitude where the idea of your control over them is just totally unquestioned. people talk about how living in terrible conditions can be bad for you, can make you worse as a person, and i think thats true, but these institutional cases are more interesting to me, right, like we need doctors and teachers. but the current system has this weird cost on the practitioner's...idk "soul", for lack of a better word
"Power corrupts" has become this trite saying, but it's true. Wielding power over other people changes you, and not in a good way. The rot creeps in.
