There’s only one gif I would argue with in this thread, but on a whole: yes. Bromance is the new Brodude attempt at shoving down queer content. LET’S CHECK THE DEFINITION OF BROMANCE:
Okay so CHECK IT OUT guys. A BROMANCE is essentially the attempt to leave toxic masculine checkpoints behind while allowing two men to socially behave in friendship as closely as two platonic women do. That is to say, we joke around, we sometimes faux-flirt, we giggle and come close to each other and share selfie-space and throw each other onto beanbag chairs and beat each other with pillows in pajama pants and nobody blinks. Bromance is about letting two dudes fuck around like that unquestioned.
So look, if Dean and Cas start throwing each other into bean bag chairs after flannel pajama pillowfights and squeezing in to selfies for Cas to upload next to his bee reblogs on The Book Of Faces, sure, I might actually buy it as a bromance. And, go figure, sometimes bromantically -classifiable-MOMENTS happen between romantic pairs as, just like with straight couples, despite popular misconception us queerfolk aren’t followed around by an eternal whirlwind of torrid romantic moments, wooshing each other over, staring longingly, hoping, holding, and breakouts of dramatic lighting or romantic music whenever we simply stand adjacent to each other.
Oh wait that still describes about 95% of DeanCas. But yes, I’ll give “Blow me, Cas,” could be sarcastic, “bromantic” if it stood alone, not outside the rest of these moments, these things, this entire structure of a relationship.
Look, if this isn’t how two platonic women would act, when it’s two men, it’s not platonic bromance. It’s just not. In fact, if you investigate the term “bromance” it has a long history linking not only to trying to rebalance gender issues, but with “homosocial historical relations”, in which many cases are blatant reductionist straighty whitewashing. Like King James described a prince as the handsomest bodied in all the land and was closer to him than anyone and built secret tunnels connecting their bedrooms directly but gosh guys, we just can’t figure out what kind of relationship they had. What a close homosocial romantic friendship this was, aka now being dismissed down as “bromance.”
This weird negotiation has ALWAYS existed. On the one hand, there is a label intended to fight toxic masculinity issues in concept (ie, bromance, let men be as friendly as women) that then some jackoff that’s terrified of the gay turns all MLM content into (“homosocial romantic friendship.”)
Destiel is not a fucking bromance any more than King James and his consort were just really close bedroom connected homosocial romantic friends but no homo.
