Elijah: Hi here's my personal storyboard process, going from script to fully realized boards. maybe it can help you
First thing I do before drawing a single thing is reading the whole script. What i'm doing while i read is understand the episode. what are the themes, what are the characters motivations, what are their relationships. all that good stuff. Why I do this is so i can gather inspiration before i actually start my scene.
What some people do while reading the script is make rough scribbles next to it. roughing out ideas you get while reading so it doesn't lose you before you forget it.
i personally don't do that cause of my second step.
My second step is doing rough sketches. this is where i scribble out my ideas, i make them messy and kinda unreadable to some other then myself. the goal for this stage for me is going fast, so you do not need to make it pretty!!!
If you make it pretty now then you'll get real disappointed when you have to delete and change it later (which, 75% of the time will happen)
Why i do this is to really get the staging down, character expressions are usually for clean up.
First thing i do is take a screenshot of the script, select and crop it into the timing im imagining
then i sketch out everything. if in the middle i realize i want another panel in-between others i would scribble it in the corner and reorganize all of the panels when im done roughing everything out (thats what all the thick lined panels are lol)
When i read everything over and i feel like it's right, i start clean up! sometimes i even get a second opinion with my roughs, but for ii usually not
I go to drawing the backgrounds. which is usually the fastest stage but i find myself overdoing it a lot haha. good part about this scene (fan & mephone scene) is that it doesn't have much to really any background detail.
Why i do this before drawing the characters? i find it important to get the scene before putting your subjects in it. you want your characters to feel like they are IN the scene not the bg is drawn around them (for the most part)
heres a better example of my bgs to characters. during this stage you're trying for angles and good composition
my tip for composition is the characters are also the composition! if a character is feeling small and sad then draw them small in the stage. it can really be as simple as that, but that isn't always the best choice. character, staging, expression, posing, angle are all just the tools to making the whole you never need to use every tool in every shot.
My next and last step is drawing the characters! What im doing during this is getting their expressions, posing and scaling down. usually my tip with drawing expressions is to have at least some part uneven, asymmetrical. perfect straightness can make your characters feel stiff. which is usually not what people are trying to go for.
for this type of animation (asset based) having perfect clean boards are not needed. that's why i draw fan like a sea shell! its a guide for the animators and designers, not a finished piece of art.
for some types of animation (like hand drawn) accuracy is good, but is also never needed! that is what layout artists are for usually in a team.
my tip is to use a brush that has little to no pen pressure and texture! when there's not pen pressure you dont need to worry about line consistency you can just draw the shapes fast and easy

Fan2: im so detailed and slow to draw!

I do not think Paper is going to die on the island.
The decision to make him be the one to stay is what makes me sure of it. He has been a focal character at this point in iv, and part of his character being that he wants to basically hold his own, he’s not fragile. Having him make this big decision to stay just to die when he’s left to fend for himself would be jarring. Paper needs a win, being the first eliminated in season 1 and not getting a second chance at proving himself until now.
At first I didn't fully consider this concept, just being like "oh yeah this is the obvious next course of action" and not realizing how many doors this opens up story wise. The contestants are basically going through the trope of lab experiments finally escaping the lab. They haven't been around actual society, they haven't been around people. No birth certificates, no licenses, no past outside of the show, just a huge group of people who just seemingly popped out of nowhere. I hope this gets explored in some way. Metag brought up the idea of them not being real people. I wonder if outsiders can tell?
I’ve seen the opinion of Fan being manipulative and becoming like mephone circulating and i wanted to put in my two cents, for as a character writer i love a complex arc. Putting all this under the cut for it’s a little long.
Fan throughout season 4 has been… rough. A major theme of the show being identity, especially for season 4 where they have to figure out how to be themselves and what that means for them.
Loving the game was Fan’s code, he was designed to be a super fan, so when the game is gone and society is built, and he is used as the AC for a hospital, it was obvious that he would want to start it back up. Bot says in episode 6 that Fan runs the game with sincerity despite them not approving of starting it back up. He loves the game, he needs it to be involved in his life.
Despite the sincerity, he has been struggling. The “am I good person” line comes to mind. Something in him is telling him that what he does is bad, and the brush off of the line makes it feel like he doesn’t know how to talk about it. He is hesitant, the game continues, test tube almost dies, the game continues. He wants this to work. He even says that any of his affinity for the game is gone. But he is still running it! Which isn’t healthy, but I think it goes a lot with the identity theme, and if the writers are going that route, how his code still impacts him.
Marshmallow is a major pushback to the game, and has been for a long time. Fan’s foil. Removed from the game, living her own life, and being impacted by Fan’s decisions multiple times.
“If you want to see me as the bad guy, so be it”again I want to bring up the am I a good person line, post strike Fan is definitely difference he’s got more of an attitude, hes short with contestants, he’s said that he “punches down” when he’s not in the right headspace. I think he’s speaking personally here, he isn’t unaware of people’s feelings this was one of his “hard conversations” he was surprised that nobody thought to leave the island. It’s a thing that has to happen. He is aware of how he treats people due to the conversation with Bot. He doesn’t want to be controlling.
“Sorry I lived”this is the line seen as manipulation, and I understand the interpretation. Especially paired with what was said before. This is a punch down, and it’s not trying to be seen as a good thing. But also…
“I’m not sorry you lived fan, but I think you are”Marshmallow doesn’t take this bs, Fan’s face after she says this, he is shaking, he is avoiding eye contact. Marshmallow is correct. “Why are all my dreams so angsty” assuming he dreamt of mephone in coma as well, does he think he deserves this?
BUT I am also not saying that the mephone parallels are not here!!! Again the dreams with mephone, him using recordings of mephone to create a sense of validation. Even just being the host of inanimate insanity with a near death experience. Characters see this too ofc, the line with OJ about unchecked power, it’s a thought in people’s mind that he will be like mephone.
so what? I think that Fan turning into mephone is a really interesting concept, but do I think it’s gonna be that simple if it happens? No. Fan is getting “worse” but he isn’t far gone, he has the right intentions, and becoming more like mephone would be not accidental but also not what he wants. If there is a conversation talking about Fan’s behavior to his face, I can only wonder how that goes. He doesn’t want to be bad, but he is showing behavioral signs in terms of attitude that I don’t think he is in the right headspace to process who he sounds like.
hopefully my thoughts make sense, I got into this show via my brother and this is the first season I have been watching with each episode airing. If I got any of the show information flat out wrong you can tell me, I just have a lot of thoughts and think this character and how he affects others is very interesting.
