something i’ve noticed so much lately is how puritanical and heteronormative ppl entering into fandom have become. fandom is built by queer or otherwise “weird” fans who don’t get to see themselves in mainstream media or who don’t get to see what they want in popular media (see: spirk fanzines in the 60s/70s, drarry shippers in the early 2000s, loustat shippers in the 80s/90s, etc.).

it is literally fandom. NOT CANON!!! that’s the ENTIRE POINT! where fans can take something and make it for themselves. it’s not a “reach” to construct an alternative narrative out of the visual and narrative material given to viewers. it’s a way of communicating and identifying thru media that otherwise chooses to punish & traumatize its canonical queer characters (notice how neither of the canon gay characters are in happy relationships by the end of the series & how will is routinely punished by vecna for his feelings!!! quite literally the entire reason we get that painful coming out scene is so that vecna can’t use it against him!!). it’s literally what fandom is for!!!!!!

there’s probably a reason why the notes on this og post are kind of homophobic but let’s not talk abt that or the kind of audience ur trying to pander to by making these kind of posts!!!!! if u don’t like a ship, jump overboard!!!!!

For real though, I learned about Eddie through fandom before watching season four, so 100% thought he was canonically gay. The first second he was on screen, I was like, "oh, he really is gay," and my mind wasn't changed during the Chrissy scene. I never once thought he had a crush (and still don't!).

But even if we want to look at the canon text of the show (I can't remember if the books count as canon), I'd say his sexuality is pretty ambiguous! Plus, you can find lots of things the Joes have said to argue that Eddie canonically had a crush on Steve. The point being, fandom and fanworks are able to exist because gaps in the text allow viewers/readers/etc etc to make what they want out of canon. If you don't think Eddie is gay, cool, yay for you, but that interpretation is available, and justified by canon, just like Eddie having a crush on Chrissy is an interpretation that is justified by canon.

Stop being homophobic (in this big year 2026!) and learn some media literacy, I beg.

Okay but imagine being the team of Eridian scientists tasked with keeping Erid's Only Human alive for as long as possible while the whole planet's environment is literally trying to kill him. And then Rocky shows up and is like:

“Grace says he would like half of dome to be water.”

“Oh, is necessary for humans to have large amounts of water question?”

Small Eridian equivalent of a sigh. “No. Not needed for life. In fact Grace will die if he falls in water and does not get out.”

“Tell him we give him water in containers that won't kill him. Lots lots lots of water on Erid for Grace to drink.”

“No. Grace say he want water on ground. Also want it with excess sodium chloride compound so it will be unhealthy for drink.”

“WHY QUESTION???”

To celebrate Erid getting their sun back on track, Grace asks for some alcohol. There's a small amount left from the Hail Mary and Rocky offers to take it to the science Eridians to see if they can synthesise more.

“Grace want this liquid for celebration.”

“Of course.” They scan it. “You have wrong liquid. This contain compounds which are poisonous for humans.”

“Yes yes yes. Grace say humans like feeling of being slightly poisoned.”

“WHY QUESTION?????”

Grace is like one of those extremely finicky tropical fish who instantly die if not kept in extremely specific conditions.

Only here the fish can talk and keeps asking you to make it vodka.

I see your “Rocky swears like a sailor but only in pitches humans can’t hear/refuses to teach Grace what those words mean” and raise you “Rocky swears like a sailor and now has to explain to Grace that ‘bad bad bad’ isn’t actually a sequence you play on your Eridian speech piano in polite company.”

Grace is both horrified and amused to realise that a more accurate translation for what Rocky’s been saying is “shit shit shit”.
