Design sketches of Justin Lazarus from KJ Charles's Sins of the Cities series because holy shit. Holy fucking shit. I was livereading these books on discord and as soon as this guy was described I had to draw him for the chat immediately because he enchants me. I adore every KJ Charles character and I have been learning how to draw them all lately but recently the art weakness has been for the reformed fake medium con artist, my beloved rat man. This guy has to be one of my favorite romance protags of all time he's such a weird little fucking tool. I truly have derangement syndrome for all of this author's books tbh, highly recommend them as always they're great if you like neurodivergent queer men in historical settings experiencing disasters and kissing each other on the lips. Please more people talk to me about them for the love of god

Little art deco illustration of Saul from KJ Charles's Spectred Isle, which is one of my very favorite supernatural/fantasy queer romances. I think about it literally all the time lmao. It's so atmospheric and clever and funny and full of love and mystery and all of the main characters are so darling, especially in the audiobook!!! I was sold on it immediately when like 5 pages in it started talking about spontaneous combustion. idk i could talk about this book forever, every time one of my friends brings it up on discord i experience a category 5 autism event lol
It's set in the 1920s and it feels so art deco to me, like one of those illustrations of the era full of graceful lines and beautiful liminal feeling gardens and forests, so this is partially a redraw/digital collage using an André Édouard Marty illustration which is actually from the 1940s I believe but still felt like the right style. I kept giggling drawing this like ough he's just a little 1920s guy, pleasant as the morning dew, confused, upsetti

last month i blacked out for 4 hours and painted Stephen Day from KJ Charles's Charm of Magpies books which are a wonderful queer historical fantasy romance series. anyway this asshole is so vivid to me. i told everyone on discord that i wanted him to look angry and malnourished and sickly and to make his freckles as un-cute as possible and everyone enabled me by calling him a perfect angel babygirl who needs a nap and a juice box. the placeholder file name for this painting was "tiny and rotten and bad" and i just never changed it
This is a completely new painting style for me and I also feel like I'm learning how to draw the human form again from scratch lately so pls be nice to me lol

Anyway a fun fact about me is I will read the fucking shit out of a queer historical romance novel so a couple months ago I decided to practice my drafting and digital painting skills by doing some fanart of Daniel da Silva from KJ Charles's Think of England. I need u to understand that all of this author's books are certified bangers that make me feel like I'm high on drugs and you should definitely read them. This one is an Edwardian pulp thriller. It's gay spy romance. I think about it every goddamn day brother
The pose and some of the design of this illustration were redrawn from a 1911 La Vie Parisienne cover by Édouard Touraine so I can't take credit for that but I can take credit for the hand painted wallpaper panels and Daniel's face card djfghjdfhgjdfj

This one has been up on Ao3 for a hot minute but I'm finally getting around to posting it to tumblr. It's a vintage advertisement redraw I did back in December for my dear friend @moveslikebucky during a Good Omens discord holiday exchange! They asked for any historical time period I liked best and I like homoerotic early 20th century advertising lol. The original was a 1921 Hart Schaffner and Marx men's fashion advertisement that I took the base of and redrew and modified, and edited in a tagline from another 20s men's fashion ad to make it cute. I wanted to make up some 1920s Halloween party outfits for A&C because I'm obsessed with how the men's ones in vintage patterns are just like, a patterned tunic and a silly hat over normal clothes. I wanted to make the illustration look reminiscent of a real vintage pattern ad so I did this one with two color ink washes! I love drawing book boys wooing each other in historical time periods it's my specialty hoohoo

As soon as I saw this prompt I knew immediately what to do because a few days beforehand I had seen this hilarious Edwardian Halloween card on Pinterest and knew I needed to redraw it as A/C bc I kept giggling every time I saw it lol. I spent a while figuring out how to imitate the look of the original print and I'm really really proud of this one and how it turned out 🧡🖤🧡
