What I love about online fandom is that it has so many different eras and they're all still here. Just today I've seen posts about Lila as a villain in season 6, and I've seen posts speculating about Lila from before Volpina came out, right next to each other. People say "I miss such and such era" but it's right here, you can just reblog it, and add to it if you feel like it. You can write whatever PRPR or love square reveal you want. You can write your own version of how you think season 6 should end. Or season 3. You can do literally anything you want with Chloé, seriously, there's no path for her that is too implausible. I think that's really great and fun and we should do more of it.

It's so weird that all of their interesting ideas are cloaked in "Oh I hate what they did to Chloe, [Author of Show] should have done [Interesting Fanon]" or a paragraph of Character Bashing that feels obligatory somehow and then it gets interesting.

You can just write whatever. Some of the best ideas get around that way.

It reminds me of when they hadn't thought about just writing literature, and everyone had to make up a guy that told them, or claim it's a translation.

for the love of GOD can we PLEASE stop treating us-centric advice as applicable to the whole entire world. Please. beyond anything else, i do not think you guys understand how difficult it makes it for young people to interact with and learn information relevant to them.

at a certain point, treating us-american advice as universally applicable borders on misinformation. i am not saying that it is done maliciously, but it is dangerous at worst. i do not want younger people going around assuming that certain laws do/do not apply to them and getting in trouble because of it. i worry about what 'fundamental/constitutional/labour rights' are only legally defensible in the USA. i worry about kids who do not know yet to wonder where the advice is for, and take it as fact because a post that reads "EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THIS" begins with "EVERYONE".

okay yes all the tags are very very good points but i would like to point out the main reason i made this post, which is that

if you are non-american then it can be dangerous to hold beliefs about your rights that are only applicable in the US.

i am australian and i have seen young australians have completely us-american perceptions on the rights they hold (or do not hold) in regards to protest, police officers, self-defense, medical care, higher education, debt, and legal proceedings. i am not talking about "boooo americans" i am talking about the genuine danger it might present to have us-centric assumptions in high-stakes situations

(please do not chalk this up to 'if you don't do research then you are stupid'. i made this post with young people in mind. that being said i am willing to bet it also applies to others, ie those who are newer to non-local internet, older folks, or those escaping high-control environments.)

You should definitely look at the coating, some of them can't go above a certain temp, and that means you cook slower.

Some ceramic is pretty bad if you cook with like acidic stuff (tomatoes, Citrus fruits for example)

I'm putting aside cast iron because I didn't come from steak culture, I come from stir fry and braise culture. I'm going to flip and toss a lot. Also, I have limp and fragile princess-like wrist. Cast iron is heavy.

There is an ickiness that is hard to put into words about seeing anti-AI or general leftist messages on Instagram. It might not be solely Instagram, I assume much of what I’m about to say applies to e.g. TikTok as well, but Instagram is the most evil platform I personally use on a daily basis.

Instagram is a platform by and for ads. Just about anything is an ad there. First, there are the actual ads, which is obvious. Then we get the content by brands, which are de facto ads, formatted like ads, but inserted into the millions of different engagement streams Instagram has for free. And then there’s everything else, which is also designed like ads. A Japanese train photographer uses clickbait reels to get more engagement for her train photos. The local firefighters are using current memes exactly the same as car brands. Posts by people showing off their cosplay contain marketing call to actions. Posts about local views are obviously A/B tested, repeating what works and burying what doesn’t.

Sure, there are exceptions, lots of people posting personal stuff, or the people dedicated to documenting every single city bus in Cologne or Sofia or wherever. But it very much feels like they’re rebels, using Instagram wrong and succeeding by accident. And even among them you find the specter of marketing creep in. Bus spotter clickbait is real.

Same for webcomics (Instagram seems to have the worst possible ones, or maybe the algorithm just decides I prefer boring punchlines), posts about urbanism and so on. It’s all an ad for the account, not even necessarily because someone wants to sell you something but because “make an ad” is the natural form of using Instagram.

And so many anti-AI messages there are also ads. They’re clearly not coming from a place of anger and thought, they’re being made because to a certain section of the target demographic, being anti AI is attractive. Anti-AI posts clearly made by AI are abundant, because it’s cheaper to pretend to have standards than to actually have them. It doesn’t take a lot of creativity to imagine what my feed would look like if Instagram thought I was pro-AI or alt-right or whatever. Instagram and the people on it are trying to appeal to me because that means getting me to spend more time looking at ads.

(For the record, Instagram is also really good at surfacing ads for model railroad manufacturers and model railroad sales I didn’t know about before; that’s the main reason I use it.)

I dunno. Instagram feels icky. I prefer a place where people will sometimes make the most dog shit boring post ever (such as this one) and all their followers will see whether they want to or not. At least in that case the WTF is real and genuine.

op i know you're probably talking about like, video games, etc, but this is also critical for research science - my lab has so much abandonware, either because the company's out of business, or the company decided to not maintain it, and it's a fucking nightmare. we have two windows 95 computers that are CRITICAL for performing experiments/data analysis because the software needed is abandonware. one of the main roles for a guy in my lab is to maintain these little dinosaurs because if they go out, we lose access to ~20 years of raw data for research. part of why is that these companies also make their own file types, and make it difficult-to-impossible to convert those file types without their specific software. by habit, i convert all research files to more generic versions (txt, pdf, tif, etc) so that i minimize risk of losing my shit, but some stuff can't be converted.

for example, we have a microscope that is perfectly functional, good microscope, but its software is abandonware because the company refused to maintain it. the company is still in business, still makes essentially the exact same software, but they made all of the old tech incompatible with new software to force people to buy the new microscope tech. it would cost a quarter million dollars to replace this microscope. this perfectly good microscope.

so like, i know a lot of people look at the original post here and go "well op just wants old video games to play" (which is valid! games companies should not be able to push shit to abandonware and then close it off) but also this is critical for like. biomedical research. if y'all had any idea how much basic infrastructure built on science relies on shit that is technically abandonware, you would probably be horrified.

OCism is also killing good writings. Because writers are creating characters first before having themes and goals. That's why your story sucked.

You have a character sheet and all sorts of details but you can't write a plot to save your life. Your pacing is dogshit.

Extremely helpful point actually.

I started with characters and built them out, then expanded the world. Which is fun, and understandable if you started from Fan Fiction, because there the themes of the story are already anchored in the themes. You're in conversation with the original, either continuing them or contradicting them. But actually writing a unique piece of literature, a new story doesn't work like that. If you don't think about what your story is about on a deeper level, you're just going to blindly put in whatever influences you.

Wouldn't it be cool if my two favorite dolls where having adventures? That's what a child does. It's important for children to do that. But have you ever tried to extract themes from that? Do you know what it's about? Is there deeper meaning beyond look at my toys?

And I thought that art doesn't have to be deeper than that, which might be true but I want mine to be deeper than that.

I have higher standards for myself. If it's not saying anything it might as well be AI generated, because that also isn't saying anything because there no individual behind it.

I'm not writing to show off my toys. I'm doing it because I want to say something and I'm using fiction to do it because it's more interesting that way.
