focused, much too focused on the task she was currently working on, she wasn’t expecting to see anyone for quite some time, let alone him. so when she feels a tap on her shoulder, involuntarily does she give a slight jump as she’s abruptly torn from concentration. yet, seeing him was more than comforting, as it always has been, and she’s much more relaxed.
❝ Yu? ❞ gaze softening, she finds his question puzzling (she did tell him she’d be busy, yes?) but more importantly, she wonders if something’s amiss.
❝ I’ve been here all day, of course! I did mention I was organizing and making more remedies. Are you alright? Is something wrong? ❞
pleased as he is that laei didn’t call him out for being a lot of inches shorter than usual, ouma masks his delight with a rehearsed scowl –– just the right nuances of worry and gentleness. he pulls out a box from his pocket and solemnly holds it.
“ I... We are parents, Laei. ”
carefully looking for changes in her expressions, ouma flicks the box open. a tiny, crudely shaped but nonetheless beautiful amethyst glows mysteriously under laei’s gaze.
“ You must now abandon your work forever. Declare your absolute devotion to our only child –– Kichi. He needs his mother and his father by his side. ”
slowly, steadily, a man carries himself through the troubled air in determined motion. fire and ice follow him until he finally reaches the girl in his vision –– laei. two fingers tap on her shoulder and soon laei’s attention is all his. he straightens up, watches her stare at him in utmost confusion and begins speaking in a voice lower than his own, observing with eyes glazed differently than his own, flaunting an atmosphere that does not belong to him. it’s the one and only –– yu kanda!
–––– ouma owed his friend tsumugi a lot of favours.
“ Laei, where have you been? I’ve been looking for you all day. ”

he hurries over towards the girl and pulls her in one fierce hug, all to accomplish his current mission –– make laei realize that her prolonged absence will not be tolerated! before her face can turn blue, he lets her go and resumes being his devilishly bubbly self:
“ I missed you so much, where the heck have you been? Were you on your drug lord endeavours again?! You should’ve told me first… ”

quite frankly, ouma would rather spend his invaluable time watching apples grow than entertain some weirdo’s bizarre requests, but he still tosses one lazy glance at the canvas ... what? what is he looking at? waves of large brushstrokes stacked upon each other form an elusively psychedelic piece. it barely resembles a portrait, though he’s not sure if it’s merely an illusion. somewhat impressed, ouma doesn’t even realize how long the artwork has held his gaze.
“ That’s... neat! It actually... it actually reminds me of the first time I poisoned my great-uncle! You see, he was a really annoying old man who –– on my very birthday –– trundled into my mansion without being invited. Can you believe that? He started harassing my poor angelic servants because he was parched, so I gave him a glass of Domestos. The weird colours he left on the floor really remind me of your drawing, sir!
Say, what do you think about drawing me? ”

he gawks as iruma’s excellent handicraft flourishes right before his eyes; barely five minutes pass but his chair no longer carries its ordinary look. something much better, much shinier glosses over every inch until it becomes unrecognizable –– the talent of the ultimate inventor! in a matter of seconds the girl creates gold from sand, leaving ouma genuinely impressed. though her kindness will always be appreciated, her patience will not go unchallenged!
“ –– What about now? Is my chair done already? ”

without uttering a single word, ouma links the ultimate detective’s wrist to his own with a pair of shiny handcuffs. something about the spontaneity and success of his actions makes him grin so sweetly, the sparkles over his eyes only grow brighter and lush. hopefully his partner in crime will at least crack a smile for his efforts!
