Antiphons - demos

Antiphons is a five piece “sad rock” band who just released a three track demo.  Recorded by Reid LaPierre (Night Idea, Houdan the Mystic), the tunes feature some really pretty vocal harmonies reminiscent of Fleet Foxes but with more of a mathier, post-rock sound.  This band is band of The Subterranea Collective, a record label which churns out some really cool experimental records.  (Check out the label recent compilation HERE, featuring familiar faces like Freaky J & The Bears, Lotus Grid, Way, Shape, or Form, Parentheses, Fight Cloud, and more.)  Someone described their music as “cathedral pop” on an upcoming event page and I like it.  

Check out “Orchard Graves” which starts with a little pep in its step and perhaps brings to mind Neko Case with its pedal steel/Americana-pop nuances.  

Catch Antiphons on 6/6 @ Norfolk Taphouse w/ Recluse Raccoon, Night Idea, and Sharkophagus (lol). Looks like it’ll be a solo set by singer Brian Dove, who, I believe, just moved back to Richmond.

Antiphons - Orchard Graves Richmond based folk-rock-pop band Antiphons play some damn catchy tunes. They just released a new three track demo, available on their bandcamp. The first track, ‘Orchard Graves’ is the standout for me, with a slide guitar riff that will keep you hooked forever. Jangly rhythm guitar fills the background, while the song grooves around your pop craving ears. Lead singer Brian Dove croons, sounding like a more world-weary Robin Pecknold. The rest of the demos follow suit, with similar eerie, despairing, catchy, fun?, folky-pop. Definitely a must listen for fans of folk rock that was coming out in ‘06-’09, i.e. Okkervil River, Fleet Foxes, The Microphones. Or maybe if porches had a Virginian brother. CHECK IT OUT.

How loud is the U. S.*? Researchers from the National Park Service, led by Kurt Fristrup, shared these sound maps at a conference on Monday.

Ten years ago, Fristrup set out to measure an important natural resource - the amount of silence in national parks. He eventually realized it would take forever to actually make recordings throughout all the parks, so he used a computer program to model loudness across the country.

He uploaded all the audio he already had (over a million hours of sound from 546 recording sites) along with environmental data - proximity to roads, the type of vegetation, any nearby topographical features that might act as sound barriers etc. The computer “learned” how all these factors interacted to create a specific sound level, and then predicted loudness everywhere.

The map of all sound roughly follows population density, though there are many uninhabited places that are still loud because they are near major roads or airplane routes.

Far more interesting to me is the map of natural sounds. What happens when you subtract all of humanity’s noise? You are left with rushing rivers, crashing waves, wind in trees … and in the mountain desert, near silence.

A lot of natural soundscapes have been severely degraded, but Fristrup told me there is a more important takeaway from this kind of research: there are lots of things we can do to decrease noise pollution in nature and in our communities.

Referred to as “Cell Trance” in the Urban Dictionnary2, this way of moving back and forth is often seen in public venues such as hallways, sidewalks, train platforms, bus stops or shopping malls. To onlookers, the erratic perambulation looks aimless, as if the caller is detached from his surroundings, absorbed in a private sonic universe.
