What was a cringy trend you were a part of?

“god, what have you heard? … no use lying about it and, i mean, bora has pictures so she could just call me out if i did lie. as awful as it sounds, back in middle school, i was going through a lot. what my dad did to my mom and me was really affecting me, and i’d get picked on a lot so i tried to fit in in the worst way possible. i cut my my hair in one of those awful styles with the side-swiped bangs and started hanging out with a crowd of kids who thought that not liking disney channel shows was a personality trait. those were the dark ages, surely. as much as i wish i could go back and make sure it never happened, taking the plunge to go ahead and follow through with what i thought i wanted brought me out of my shell. as embarrassing as it is to look back, part of me is glad it happened because if it hadn’t, who knows who i would be now.”

what advice would you tell your younger self?

“probably not to take what other people say to heart. i used to get picked on for my name – my real name – and my accent, and it would really cut me up. now i know that what those people thought didn’t matter. those people didn’t matter.”

What quality do you most value in a friend?

“honesty — and no, the irony is not lost on me. bora is the best friend anyone could ever ask for because she’s always straight up, never leaves me guessing what’s really going on inside her head. i wish i could give her the same courtesy, but i guess i am a shit friend.”

what is one thing you want to tell someone but dont have the courage to say?

“i’d probably tell dante to focus on something other than making my life a living hell — no matter how hypocritical that would sound. i’d tell yifei that most of the stuff i say when we’re fighting is just lies — unnecessary lies. i’d tell bora … i wish i could tell her everything. she doesn’t deserve someone doing nothing but lie to her and, honestly, lie badly. i wish I could be the type of friend she deserves.”

if you can have any other occupation, what would it be and why?

“i always thought it would be exciting to be a counselor, like my mom. she’s great at what she does and always knows how to give the best advice. i wasn’t lucky enough to get that from her, so it’s probably for the best that i just write. i’m more concise with my words that way.”

what are your thoughts on love?

“it’s a nice idea. i mean, platonic love doesn’t get nearly enough respect. i’d rather have a million good friends instead of only one significant other — that was pathetic, wasn’t it?”

What are you addicted to?

“learning. yeah, it probably is just what you’d expect a nerd to say but i try to learn something new everyday … even if it is just something new about myself. those usually are the most interesting discoveries.”

if you were given a day to do anything you wanted with no consequences, what would it be?

“stop lying and tell the truth. the whole truth. about everything — it’s not worth lying anymore, and not having consequences means i won’t have to see how bora reacts.”

what do you regret saying, or not saying?

“i regret being such an asshole to yifei on a nearly regular basis. sure, we don’t usually get along when we’re sober but i know that’s no excuse to say whatever i want to her and think there are no repercussions. i wouldn’t blame her if she hates me. i wouldn’t blame her at all.”

     re: noah’s keen ability (read: bad habit) to always find the bad in every situation and wants to avoid any and all conflict.

    "who's that woman on your arm? all dressed up to do you harm, and i'm hip to what she'll do give her just about a month or two."

     re: he knows that he and yifei don’t make sense in the grand scheme of things, and they can both do a lot of damage to the other . . . but damn, no one ever told him bad decisions would be this much fun.

trauma.

    “the wounds come back to life, i try to avoid them but get hurt every time. my heart gets hurt, yeah i know, it can’t just be me."

     re: the past he tries to escape, but never can. between false memories of his father flooding his mind, to the distinct possibility that he’s wasting away his life, he can’t escape.

tomorrow, today.

    "again today, there are questions i don’t know. i’m trying to answer but i’m not confident. is it this way or that way? i’m afraid of my decision."

     re: his continual journey to find the answers to all of life’s questions. it’s why he’s so passionate about journalism, because he knows that someone else has to be asking the same questions he is.

    "two drifters off to see the world, there's such a crazy world to see. we're all chasin' after all the same, chasing after our rainbow's end."

     re: he knows that bora is basically the best thing to ever happen to him. he’s so lucky to be able to call her his best friend and, despite the fact that they are the unlikeliest of friends, noah knows that’s how it was always meant to be.

    "i never should have told you. i never should have let you see inside. don't want it troubling in your mind; won't you let it be?"

     re: he really needs to kick that habit of speaking before he thinks, because he cannot keep secrets for too long and it’s going to kill him someday.

    "walk in the room, all i can see is you staring me down. i know you feel it too."

     re: it’s the karaoke song of the karaoke songs. it slaps and noah knows big rob’s rap by heart.

little star.   

    "twinkle, twinkle little star, how i wonder where you are. wish i may, wish i might, make this wish come true tonight."

     re: it might be silly to keep holding onto his dreams, but someone has to, right? he wants to do right by those he loves and he wants the entire town to know that both the mystery inc. kids and the hex girls are filled with good people.

i wish it would rain.   

    "and no one will ever know that i'm crying. crying when i go outside. to the world outside my tears, i refuse to explain."

     re: he’s just got a lot of emotions and he likes to put this song on when he’s in his feelings about anything and everything.

take it to the limit.  

    "it's so hard to change. can't seem to settle down, but the dreams i've seen lately keep on turning out and burning out and turning out the same."

     re: he’s a creature of habit ( although i feel like i’ve said something to that effect about 10 times now ) 

it's not living ( if it's not with you. )   

    "all i do is sit and drink without you. if i choose, then i lose. distract my brain from the terrible news, it's not living if it's not with you."
