i think ouyang would get heart palpitations if he knew that i regularly refer to esen as his trophy wife in my brain
like i tend to think about esen as more narrative device than a character to think about separately because his relationships with the other characters are easily my favorite thing about him, which is why he became ouyang's trophy wife 👍

I know zhu and ouyang are meant to mirror and be parallels for each other in the narrative but it's still kinda insane how if you look at their life stories they are practically the same person, like
both watch their families die violently at ~10 years old
with their families dead they are both still so determined to survive they carve themselves a way to keep on living anyway even if it’s insanely hard; ouyang becoming a eunuch and zhu waiting on the steps of the monastery for days
in order to keep on living, they also have to hide some essential part of who they are; zhu her gender, and ouyang his desire for revenge
they manage to spend their teenage years and early adulthood in relative comfort hiding away from the fate that they don’t want but are aware is waiting for them
and by not wanting their fates I mean they really, actively, DO NOT WANT IT!! zhu just wants to stay in the monastery hidden from the world and her nothing fate, and ouyang wants to play war with esen without having to think about his revenge forever
but of course they end up destroying each other’s comfortable bubbles (ouyang burning down the monastery and zhu causing ouyang the worst professional failure and humiliation of his life), becoming a catalyst for each other’s fates
and as the story progresses, those fates become the thing they want more than anything else, something they’ll be willing to hurt their loved ones over, no matter how much it hurts them too
at the end of swbts, they both have committed some atrocity (zhu killing the prince of radiance and ouyang killing esen) that allows them the command of an army, promising that army a victory over their mongol rulers
and then there’s of course the gender stuff
both of them share the core experience of hating or fearing their body growing up, wishing it was the ’perfect male body’ instead
which of corse meant that basic things like bathing became something to be feared and loathed because it would reveal the state of their body to themselves and/or others
their looks are very frequently commented on by others
and most importantly they are both specifically diagnosed by a medical practitioner of some kind to have a lack of masculine yang energy. yay!!!!

how do we think ouyang would feel about sports? because i think that is an interesting question that we as a nation are not adressing. i was gonna post this as a poll but tbh there is too much potential answers i think. like, obviously he is a general so there is a baseline level of ability there, but also that doesn't tranalate to enjoyment, right. sports just have so many gendered connotations and are just like, very bodily, which could make for an interesting torment nexus for him.
basically what i'm suggesting is radiant emperor sports au
Hmm i think he'd like sports! He's very competitive and i think during his convo with Zhang at the spring hunt they even talk about it, with Ouyang being like "well for sure i don't enjoy losing". In regards to the bodily aspect, i think he enjoys the exhaustion that comes from the fight etc and he thinks of his body as a weapon (or weapon accessory even) so that could translate into him being like "my body is a machine for winning".
In terms of specific sports, i think all team sports are out of the questiob xD he's not a team player at all. But also i think he values strength above technique after all so probably not a sport where technique is everything (i don't see him in modern horse riding for example. Unless it's racing - that could be an exception).
Ohhh okay okay I think he'd be super into them because its another field of dominating other men and proving his manliness and also hes good at them. Archery, horse racing, wrestling--hes excelling, plus the homoerotic shame nexus of wanting to win the wrestling match but also wanting to lose and be pinned and dominated would really do it for him.
I think Esen would also be very proud and boastful of his victories which Ouyang would be into, but Esen might at some point go overboard and now it reads as "my pet eunuch Ive trained to do tricks like archery" and Ouyang would seethe. His arena of displaying his manliness has suddenly been recast as a venue where people view his achievements as a cute little trick. He'd be furious. He'd absolutely stop participating. Last time he wrestled he broke someone's arm.
Another one on Team Sports AU here. Ouyang dismisses the sports at the Spring Hunt because they are style over substance, and he's busy proving his masculinity in what he considers the real thing, battle, which is also what Esen values more. But modern AU in a world in which sport is highly prestigious and success in it is associated with masculinity, and this is something he's supremely good at technically and enjoys enough to put in the disciplined training? He's going to love sport. There are those body issues, but sport offers him an arena in which he has control of his body and reward for his prowess with it, though he's going to try to kill anyone who suggests he try figure skating.
As for what he'd play, like many naturally gifted athletes, he'd probably enjoy multiple sports at some level, as well as excelling in his chosen one(s). Canon gives us outstanding talent in archery, equestrianism, sword-fighting/fencing, and martial arts. The existence of modern weight classes in the latter is a big help! Alas, there are none in traditional Mongolian wrestling, so he can compete well enough to display his skill, but he's not going to be the world champion (although the experience of homoerotic shame can also be a victory). I actually think he could be a good football player in many ways, but the @astrarche-x's team sport issue means he is going to be strong on school teams but not care enough to take it further.
But the modern sport in which he is going to utterly destroy the field and make everyone embarrassed to show up? It's got to be that most stupid of Olympic sports, modern pentathlon. Riding, fencing, shooting (suddenly in the future Ouyang will need a couple of days of practice, but the skills will transfer), swimming, and running. He's going to smash the competition, take gold and then go off for a silver in graeco-roman wrestling.
