having all of the last hope spoiled for you (+ everyone who died)

liking and reblogging fanart of characters from arcs you haven't read yet (bonus points if its frostdawn or moonpaw)

getting really excited when a character you've seen people talking about is finally introduced

wishing you had started reading the books when you were like 7

getting everything spoiled for you while actively choosing to engage with the online fandom anyways

trying to gaslight yourself into thinking all the spoilers you saw were fake (it doesn't work)

I own 4 complete arcs and a few super editions and separate arc books by themselves, but I haven’t even gotten to arc 2 yet because the spoilers I’ve gotten over the years are going to make it boring for me I fear 🥹

What really pushes my buttons in the EPIC: The Musical fandom is the mischaracterization of Polites. And no, this discussion isn’t about his infantilization. ( Even though that pisses me off as well ) It’s the fact that people can’t seem to accept the fact that he is a naive character, driven too much by his optimism.

Perhaps he wasn’t as naive or optimistic in the war, but afterwards he most likely wanted to shift his mindset to positivity. ( Too quickly. ) Which led to him trusting too easily, and ultimately his demise. That is how they were led to the cave in the first place. He barely thought twice about the Lotus Eaters and assumed they were heading the crew in the right direction.

As much as I love him, he is flawed. Almost every single character in the story is flawed. Including the main 3 male mortals. ( As in Eury, Ody, and Poli ) Polites’ naïveté led them to the cave, Odysseus’ pride got Poseidon on their tails, and Eurylochus’ curiosity led him to opening The Wind Bag.

People fail to characterize Polites like the man he is, because no, he isn’t cold and brutal. But he’s not the most merciful and innocent being ever. He’s kind, but we can infer that he’s killed people. He could possibly regret it, we don’t know that. It’s just that his main trait is optimism. I’m tired of people saying that calling Polites naive is infantilizing him, because it’s not. It’s just the truth. Adults can be naive too.

I’m also tired of the entire fandom only blaming one person for all the conflict, because it is very well Polites, Eurylochus, and Odysseus’ fault all together. They each played a role in moving the story further, whether it was positively or negatively.

Polites is not an innocent little bean to be protected, but most likely someone who wanted a fresh start. Somebody who didn’t want to dwell on the memories of the war, somebody who wanted to redeem himself with kindness. That is what we can assume.

Even in death, Polites will find a way to make friends.
