By no means is this to push pity on characters, I just wanted to push insights on my view of somethings.
Imagine being hungry at sea for years, as you watch all your men die and be sacrificed after your very captain saying that he will protect his men from Circe and would go in to make sure that everyone will come back safe home. Only for them to be killed off by the gods and the Scylla. Its crushing, the same person who said they'd protect the team, has also gave up. You'd give up with them despite having a wife back at home. (Eurylochus was married to Odysseus' sister, Ctimene. That's why in the Mutiny song, Odysseus calls him brother. I quote "Don't make me fight you, brother, you know you'd have done the same") I felt disgust at people just joking and simplifying him down as a big back for being desperately hungry and tired, wanting to go back home. Cause I feel like not much insight has been put into his character and it was a way to downplay Odysseus flaws ever since they see how he is in EPIC, while forgetting this is a real Greek mythological character.
When they got to the sun gods land, of Helios, I have seen a theory on this and it had opened my mind that Eurylochus was simply accepting defeat, again in the song Mutiny, it says..
"And hunger is so heavy (hunger is so heavy)
Please don't tell me you're about to do what I think you'll do
Ody, we're never gonna get to make it home You know it's true
You don't know that's true This is the home of the Sun God
I'm starving my friend
But if you kill his cattle, who knows what he'll send? This is the home of the Sun God
I'm tired, my friend
But we're so close to home, this can't be where it ends
How much longer must I suffer now?"
Not the full thing but seriously, it was in the EPIC song the whole time and people were too focused on Odysseus being injured on that part to realize that Eurylochus knew they were gonna die. I guess its just in the Thunder Bringer song, when Odysseus chooses for his team to go, its what startled Eurylochus but simply he knew they were never gonna go back home anyways.
There's a ton of things in the story so far that Eurylochus has done wrong, but literally a lot of the characters have too, so can we simply not downplay anything. 😭
