Something that helps me a lot when developing and making art of the various Mass Effect species, is keeping in mind what real-life animals they could be based off of. Here, I have compiled a list of the main animals I believe each species takes inspiration from. This way, one can get a clearer image of how that alien may function both biologically and socially. Bear in mind that many of these are based off of my own perception!

Asari = Orcas

Salarians = Frogs

Krogan = Tortoises

Turians = Parrots (Specifically Cockatoos)

Quarians = Felines (headcanon)

Batarians = Bats (Specifically Vesper Bats)

Volus = Walrus (headcanon)

Elcor = Elephants

Hanar = Jellyfish

Drell = Lizards (Specifically Anole)

Angara = Seals

Absolutely stellar Mass Effect fanfic idea.

Two Asari kiddos are attending the same school, but pick on each other constantly from day one. One Asari is a hot-headed type who can’t use her biotics, the other Asari is a nerdy and proper type. They end up getting into a fight, which puts them in detention where their parents are called to the school.

Upon their respective parents’ arrival, it is revealed that the hot-headed Asari is the daughter to a krogan father, and the nerdy Asari is the daughter to a salarian father. The krogan father has a job working as security, and has just moved from his former home so his daughter could attend this new school for biotics, despite showing little sign of biotic capabilities. The salarian father is a doctor from the Citadel, trying to set his daughter up for success. It is also revealed that both fathers are without their Asari partners, who have both passed away prematurely, leaving the fathers to raise their daughters alone.

The majority of the story is the rivalry between the two Asari kids and their fathers, which slowly turns into a friendship. The krogan father opens up to the salarian how it is hard to raise an Asari while being profiled and insisted to that he is unfit to be a father, while the salarian father opens up to the krogan how he will die long before his daughter reaches adulthood and fears that he doesn’t have anyone to take care of her once he is gone. The krogan father eventually offers to help raise the salarian’s daughter once he is dead, saying their two girls have become as close as sisters.

I’m coining this. But I’m in the middle of writing Sorahk so I can’t do anything with it. BLAST!!
