inspired by @heirofglee's absolutely breathtaking cosplay
philip/belos is irredeemable and horrible. and yet the owl house repeatedly shows him struggling, overcoming adversity, and allows us to glimpse him as a young man and even as a child. it really just...... humanises him. i can't think of many other cartoons that do that with their irredeemable villains.
it makes him an intensely tragic and horrific villain imo, bc you KNOW that despite the deeply evil things he's done, he was once a little boy playing pretend with his big brother. holding his brother's hand when he was scared. doing mundane stuff like learning to churn butter, learning to read and write, smiling and laughing and playing like any other child does.
he murdered caleb. he stabbed him to death.
and you have to reconcile that, and all of the terrible things he's done since, with this image of a little boy who clearly adored his big brother. they're not different people. philip wasn't possessed, he didn't suddenly become evil, no single event happened to make him what he is now. it was a slow creeping metamorphosis. with time he built a repulsive twisted exoskeleton around himself. but that little boy is still there. he didn't disappear. it's just another part of him. in a way, the biggest part. the collector is the obvious eternal child in the show, but i don't think philip ever really grew up either.
i don't say any of this to make excuses for him. it's the opposite, tbh. he knew what kindness and love were like, and you know he has the capacity for doing good. a villain who is born evil and incapable of feeling love or doing good is like an animal to me. if it's just their nature, if they were born that way, then it removes the agency from their actions. they were born evil.
philip on the other hand, was not born evil. he was born as an ordinary human baby like anyone else. evil is a choice he made, over and over again. he could be good, he could end the suffering and pain he causes to others, and yet he consciously chooses not to. every waking moment of his life he chooses to be evil. it literally doesn't have to be this way. but he'll never stop. his stubbornness, probably a mildly irritating but ultimately endearing trait in his childhood, is now the thing that drives him further down the wretched path he walks. the part of him that's a little boy isn’t compartmentalised, isn't watching on in terror as he commits atrocities. that part of him is what drives him to keep going, i think. he's so very very human in the worst way possible
sorry ik thanks to them is old news at this point but i still love how the facial expressions are drawn in this scene. like that's so clearly philip's bitchass in there, the way he emotes and looks is so very philip-ish despite having a different face. zeno robinson's voice acting rules too bc he gets the cadence and tone of matthew rhys's belos voice down so well, to the point where it's clearly Not Hunter even before he starts speaking with philip's voice. everything abt the possession scene is so masterful it's just rlly good.
also side note but i like how philip's face turns so tense and angry looking right as he makes the strike with the intent to kill luz. it almost feels like he's needing to steel himself to do it, which would make sense since she's a human and i can't imagine that killing another human would be particularly pleasurable for him, even one who's his enemy. normally he's so calm and collected and smiles a lot around luz, like he sees the whole thing as a game, but here his mask slips and you can see the intent to kill in him, the fact that beneath the lugubrious calm exterior he really is an unhinged killer who has murdered before and will do so again with little hesitation. just for a second, his animal brutality shows through. i love it
