And a change of pace. Modern glam rock from Ginger Wildheart. Just lovely stuff, perfect for cranking up and downing whisky. Incidentally I’m in the video, it was filmed at the Astoria for their gig in December 1999. 1m 48s, bald guy headbanging :) As you can see, it was a fucking amazing gig!

After seeing it on the Walking Dead this evening, I’ve been reminded of the poignant beauty of this song. Everything about it is sepia tinged, it’s a dustbowl ballad, the sound of creaking wooden houses, farm workers and crackling fires. Tom waits knows how to crack out a ballad and this is one of his best.

Ain’t this just wonderful? Ginger Wildheart and a cast of musicians do mental metal just right. I could have chosen any of the bonkers tunes, but this is a bit special. Corrosion of Conformity - Dance of the Dead. An absolute classic metal tune. COC went more groove metal after this album, ditching their singer for Pepper Keenan with excellent results, but this is the sound of 90s metal.

Antiproduct - Bungee Jumping People Die. Back in the late 90s, early 2000s I loved these guys. Utterly insane live (the first time I saw them, the singer stood naked on a speaker stack and sprayed his bollocks green. A great tune and one that was always the highlight of their live sets. A proper punk band with melodies and an awesome chorus.

Clutch - The Soapmakers. My god this is a riff and a half. A simple song, following the Black Sabbath template of vocals that follow the riff, but when it's this good it could go on all day. Fuzzed up and blissed out, this is stonking stuff.

Ginger Wildheart - Internal Radio. A fantastic exploration of how much songs really mean to us. Excellent mixing up of rhythms in the verses and a chorus that sticks to your brain like peanut butter.

Therapy? - Six Mile Water. While Therapy? are best known for their punky pop, when they choose to slow it down they are capable of brilliance. This is a superb tune from their criminally underrated album Suicide Pact: You First. Heartfelt and just fantastic

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath. More classic rock and this, the doomiest, most terrifying song ever written. I don't care what kind of music you listen to. This is a work of art. the bells, the rain, and then the bludgeoning guitars. And Ozzy may have turned into a caricature, but by god he could sing. This is metal. This is rock. This is everything in between.

The Rain Song - Led Zeppelin. What can you say about Led Zep. One of the greatest bands in history. Not just because they rocked like hell. Which they did. But because they could write the most beautiful, heartbreaking ballads. Like this one.

She Watch Channel Zero - Public Enemy. Slayer riff, lyrics about braindeath through TV, in your face performance. This is why Public Enemy are the first and last word in hip hop. You find someone who complains it's bitches and hoes... Play em this

Goin Out West - Tom Waits. Tom has made a career out of playing up the old west persona, but this tune is just sheer badassery. The dirtiest bass sound ever put to tape, tremelo guitars and the most ridiculous lyrics that still sound amazing, only Mr Waits could pull them off.
