The inspiration for Beauty Bot was Claudia Schiffer. We used reference footage of her walking on the runway, and we’d use that to try and define her character and to give her that powerful, strong walk. Adding a full CG character like Beauty Bot into a shot requires some careful planning on set. We had a stand-in, in a green suit, on roller skates – because we decided early on that Beauty Bot was going to move very smoothly, almost skating. We cast a stand-in that could skate, and was the right height and eye-line for everything we needed, and we filmed her in place. Specifically, there was one very difficult shot where Beauty Bot was pushing her way through beaded curtains. She’s in front of another actor, so when we paint out the green actress, we’re left with a gap where there’s nothing, because it was covered by her pixels. And then we had to put our Beauty Bot in, but ours was slightly thinner and slightly taller at the end of the day, based on some design changes. That was incredibly hard to paint back all of (Tom Benedict Knight) who was behind, and basically create those pixels for somebody who – there was nothing there. We did that for a lot of shots.
