Red can’t handle losing Liz - that’s canon. Add in the fact that he’s sick and how the heck is anyone supposed to enjoy season 9? Unless they plan to make him completely ooc, it’s going to be 20+ eps of Red in a health/grief spiral that inevitably ends with his headstone next to Liz’s (if they don’t put her next to Tim, that is 😖). This show is THE WORST.
The immediate question I had after watching the finale was: what the hell was it all for then?
It’s such a dark and cynical message to send. We get glimpses of her fantasy coming true, we get glimpses of a return to normalcy, we get glimpses of what even could have been a redemption arc.
And then, when it’s made clear that she can’t do what Red has asked of her because after all these years he still means too much to her, then they kill her. And Red gets to watch her die in his arms for a second (!!!) time. How in the world, as a writer, do you not turn the I can’t do it/that’s alright exchange into something hopeful? A setup like that? How do you make Liz’s character suffer for that too?
And cursed, broken Red gets to grieve again because he has ultimately failed his mission of protecting her. She was his whole life. It was all for her. And he failed. And Agnes in the midst of it all is turned into an orphan.
I never saw TBL as a tragic show. I always believed that, when it came down to it, it was a show about redemption and yes, love and sacrifice. Instead, it turns out it’s a show about endless suffering that’s cruel, relentless and unforgiving to the characters it has created.
