Tumblr has been my home for years.
I made an account in 2011/2012, after deviantArt became borderline unusable.. It took me a few weeks to start caring; it was such a different site! I may have used Facebook, but this was a totally new ballgame. Not only did the staff seem to care (unlike dAs), I was dazzled by the gifs; totally enamored with the humor; charmed by the users.
Completely in awe of the freedom for NSFW content.
Every site I’ve been on, consistently, banned the content I needed most. As a teenager (and, yes, a minor–sue me), I had clinical hypersexuality because of trauma. Talking about NSFW writing and art, looking around at NSFW tags, following blogs I probably shouldn’t have; this helped keep me stable.
This helped me avoid actually fucking killing myself.
Even as the site started to degrade, I loved it.. Even as the staff began to mirror all those failed sites before it, I stuck around. Even as the discourse became unmanageable, well, I still couldn’t find it in my heart to leave.
And sure. After a while, I became more active on facebook, having grown restless from not having a central fandom for a time, but I still held onto the idea I’d come back. Maybe I knew it was a hellsite–I certainly talked about how awful it could be–but it was my /home/. It was MY site. I had grown up there, feeling safer in my mental illness, no matter how shit the user base could be.
Eventually, I even came back. I had a fandom again. My hypersexuality had gone hyperdrive. There were blogs I fell in love with after glancing at a distance.
It’s over, because the fucking staff doesn’t understand the appeal of their own site.
It doesn’t matter why. Yahoo, Apple, change of hands, antis on staff, whatever the fuck caused this. It’s over. It’s fucking over.
Like dA, I’ll find another site, and I’ll buddy up there, until it fucks me too. But no matter what jokes anyone made about this shit hellsite, I’d felt at peace there in a way nothing else had.
Goodbye, Tumblr. Though you’re not shutting down immediately, we’re all packing our bags. The ride’s over. It’s time to move on.
But I know I’ll be there to hold your hand as they pull the plug.
