What is this?

My Tumblr aims to create a place where I can share my modern practice of Ozark magic and healing. My practice is rooted in tradition, but I accept that we live in the modern era, which may require modern solutions. This means taking ancestral wisdom and gleaning out the essential truths so that it can be applied to other situations.

I consider myself both a keeper and practitioner of Ozark magic and healing and as a keeper, I wish to share this beautiful culture to keep it from dying out.

Why the Ozarks?

Because they are in my blood and soul. A line from the state song of Arkansas says, "I may wander, but when I do, I will never be far from you." That sums up how I feel about these old mountains. The spirits that inhabit them are as ancient as they are, and many of these spirits are as worn as the plateaus that make up the region.

In addition, Ozark practices are a living practice that integrates magical practices that descend from pre-Christian times with indigenous plants and spirits. It also does not require fancy equipment or herbs and relies more on household objects and local plants.

My Personal Practice

While I grew up with some magical and healing practices, I did not begin serious study until 2020, when I found my mentor. I studied with her for 2 years and completed my apprenticeship in 2022. Since then, I have been teaching folks to discover their own folk magic at Pagan events across the US.

My primary focus is working with native plants and stones.

Folk Magic Battle Bag

Magical workings don't always take place at home. This is my "battle bag" I take with me when I need to perform magic or workings on the road.

My Bag

The bag is a basic canvas molle waist bag. I also attached a small, padded essential oil case.

Energetic Cleansing in Hotel Rooms

When staying in a place like a hotel, it can be hard to use the "typical" methods you might use at home to cleanse a space. Smoke cleansing is out due to the sprinkler system. Sound cleansing might disturb neighbors. So, how can you cleanse a space without getting an extra cleaning charge on your credit card?

Salt water in a fine mist sprayer - this is my tried and true. I keep an empty fine mist bottle and salt packages in my suitcase so I have it when I travel, but even those saline spray bottles in the first aid section would work.

Stones and crystals - especially if you charged them at home. A cleansed quartz cluster can cure a myriad of energetic issues.

Let there be light - open all the curtains, turn on all the lights, and allow the sunshine and light to cleanse the area.

Prayer and offerings - make an offering to the spirits of the place you are and pray to your divine beings to cleanse and protect the space.

Publicly accessible spaces are often challenging energetically, but these few tips can make the space easier to occupy for a brief time.

You don’t have to have fancy crystals and herbs for spell jars btw. You can use sugar, coffee grounds, leaves, acorns, etc. Don’t fall victim to witchcraft consumerism.

House Protection Ointment

This is an all purpose protective for your home. Other ingredients can be added for for specific purposes.

Ingredients

1/4 cup of Vaseline

3 TBS of Tajin

1 tsp asafetida (aka hing) powder

1 tsp graveyard dirt or rust powder

Melt the Vaseline in a double boiler and then add the other ingredients. Place in a sealable, heatproof container and let cool.

To use

On the full moon, rub a small amount of the ointment on your exterior door and window frames and corners of your house. While you work, pray to your divine being of choice to strengthen and protect your home and all those who live within.

Works best if you renew it at least once a quarter on the full moon. You can also add a bit to witch bottles to increase their power.

Tajin for Protection

Protection powders and potions are common across many cultures. My own mentor taught me a very simple recipe:

Something Hot

Something Sour

Salt

An Enhancer

Tajin has all three base ingredients! The best thing is it is cheap, easily accessible, and you can use the bottle as part of your working.

A Note about Enhancers

Enhancers are added to make the working more potent. In general, they can be divided into a few groups:

Herbs and powders to increase potency. This usually involves ingredients such as asafoetida, camphor, cedar, or yarrow.

Items to tie it to a specific person/spirit

Items to specialize the powder. If you want someone to go away and also not talk about you, you might add something to sweeten their speech.

In my next post, I will have a recipe and ritual for House Protection Ointment, my own personal blend that I use on the corners, windows, and doors as an all purpose protective spell for our home.

It's goldenrod season! This versatile flower has many historical medicinal and magical properties, and is one of the easiest flowers to find and harvest!

If you're traveling down almost any highway this time of year, you will see these bright yellow flowers. The goldenrod flower can cross breed which means there are over 180 recognized variants across the globe. They tend to bloom from late August until the first frost.

I am not a certified herbalist, so I will direct you to the Chestnut School of Herbal Medicine's extensive page on Goldenrod.

Huge word of caution: if you have a latex allergy, it is advised to skip using goldenrod, as it has 7% latex.

Folk Uses

In the British Isles, it was believed the leaves of a goldenrod plant could lead you to riches.

Many cultures use goldenrod as a divining tool. The stalks would be used for dowsing for both springs and treasure, and the young leaves can be used as a tea to increase divination.

It is also an excellent addition to any prosperity work such as washes, incense, and bowls. It is best to use leaves for washes, as the flowers are known to dye things bright yellow.

For those who practice fiber craft, you can dye natural plant fiber based fabric and yarn for prosperity work.
