Part 2 of my wife’s October cryptid comic (see part 1 here)! Our little Fresno Nightwalker meets the Joplin Spooklight! Can they guide him back to his friend?
The Joplin Spooklight appears in a small area known locally as “the Devil’s Promenade” on the border between Missouri and Oklahoma, west of the small town of Hornet, Missouri. The Spooklight is commonly described as a ball of light, although some say it more resembles a camping lantern traveling a couple feet off the ground.
I haven’t contributed to the Flight Rising tag in like three years or something, so here’s Spooklight, the ringleader of a circus, hatched on All Hallow’s Eve. I’m considering finding someone to commission art from for him.
I wanted to make some cute little GSC style scenes of some of my personal favorite creepy/cryptid type things: stairs in the woods and spooklights.
Extra big versions and bonus under the cut!
Here’s another shot of the pumpkin I carved with my family yesterday. I didn’t have any tools, so I had to use a spoon, flat head screwdriver and small kitchen knife. It was a lot of for sure! Fun family day! #Repost @theserpentsofbienville (@get_repost) ・・・ Jack-o’-lanterns are made to scare off the lost souls that are roaming the land of the living, with the glowing light tricking the spirits into thinking there was already a haint nearby. But when Cahaba was still the capital in 1862, no lanterns were lit. This was the year the light first appeared. It floated slowly, then zipped about, one night behind General C.C. Pegue’s home. He and other witnessed were shock and astounded at the sight. Two weeks later, as if the spirit delivered an omen, at the same time of night as the sighting, Pegue was wounded in battle, and passed away shortly after. The glowing light that still returns to Cahaba, and is an incredibly regular sighting for visitors, is known still today, as Pegue’s Ghost. 🎃💀👻🎃 For more legend and lore, check out our “Hallow-Bama!” Zine and Alabama Ghost Map at Serpents of Bienville, Southern Artist Collective in downtown Mobile! Whether you call them spooklights, fire haunts, or corpse candles, the stories always seem to be the same. I was told the story, and have read many similar, of a ball of fire being seen rising up from the middle of a cemetery. Sometimes the storyteller says they have walked through the cemetery, and the one told to me in particular, near St. Stephens, says she was a little girl, riding in the backseat of the car as her and her mother drove past. The ball of fire followed them home, quickly as the sped up, and slowly as they slowed. She asked her mother if she saw the light, and her mother assumed they were just being followed by someone with a wonky headlight. Yet, the light stayed the same distance back, and she swore it looked like fire. As they pulled up to their home, her mother rushed her inside as the spooklight tuned into their driveway, same speed their car just had. After a few moments of feeling safe inside, the girl looked out to the porch. The ball of fire sat perfectly still in front of the door. The girl didn't sleep a wink. She sat on the couch, watching that light, and finally as the sun rose, the fire faded out. She walked outside after mustering her courage, and not a trace of scorch could be found. . . . #theserpentsofbienville #alabamaoddities #alabama #southern #spooklight #paranormal #haunted #creepy
