@p-altrow-blog
1. Always have a water bottle in your car 2. Carry an extra lighter (even if you donât smoke) 3. Get something new where you go to eat often, not just your usual. 4. Make a budget for yourself 5. But donât forget to give yourself some play money and always round up on how much things cost so you have money left over 6. If youâre texting someone, but nervous to send it, just click the fucking send button. You typed that shit out for a reason. 7. Stay out late, but wake up early. Youâll be glad you had all of your day. 8. If something makes you laugh until your sides hurt, write it down in the notes in your phone, youâll want to remember that later. 9. When youâre talking to someone, and you suddenly think of something you want to say, put up a finger and wait for them to finish talking. Itâll help you remember what you wanted to say, but you wonât interrupt them. 10. Go to plenty of concerts. Especially outdoor ones. Get drunk with your friends, but not sloppy drunk. Just drunk enough to scream your favorite songs and dance without feeling embarrassed. 12. Always keep a change of clothes in your car. Including a pair of shoes. You never know. 13. Keep at least $20 cash on you at all times. Gas is usually cheaper when you pay with cash, and not everywhere you go to eat splits checks. 14. Itâs okay to be sad, but try not to forget about what makes you happy. 15. Coupons are always fantastic. 16. If you think something is cute, fucking wear it. Donât worry about what everyone else thinks. Youâll look great, I promise. 17. Sex stores are fun, even if you just want a good laugh. 18. Plan out your days off with your friends, that way you arenât stuck around asking the âI donât know what do you wanna doâ 19. Donât forget to remind your friends how much they mean to you. 20. If someone gives you a compliment, smile and say thank you. They wouldnât say it, if they didnât mean it. 21. Drink plenty of water. Not only does it keep you hydrated, but clears your skin. 22. I know you might want to be tan, but is it really worth being burnt and exposing yourself to all that skin cancer bull shit? No. Use at least SPF 15. Itâs not that hard and youâll still tan. So stop being a brat. 23. Youâre allowed to be happy. Donât ever let anyone tell you otherwise. 24. Aim to be better, not bitter. 25. Some days are better than others. 26. You can never over pack. Pack what you want. Youâll be glad you have options to choose from. 27. Take those extra hours at work. Itâll be worth it when you see your paycheck. 28. Clean your fucking room and make your bed you slob. Itâll look so much nicer and youâll feel better you did it. 29. If you have to, make the first move. Itâs scary, but someone has to do it. 30. Take plenty of pictures. Of the sunset, your food, your friends, your dog, selfies. Everything. That way, later when you scroll through your camera roll, youâll remember everything about that day, good or bad.

God and His priests and His kings Turn their faces Even they feel the cold What you are given Canât be forgotten And never forsaken
Oh, I know itâs probably much too late To try and apologize for your mistakes So I just want you to knowâŚ
I hope he buys me flowers I hope he holds my hand Gives me all his hours When he has the chanceâŚ

5 Books on Writing That Every Writer Should Read
To be a better writer, there are really only things that you need to do: Read, and write. But that doesnât mean that you canât read about being a writer, and that having a well-rounded understanding of how writing âworksâ isnât beneficial.
These 5 books were all assigned to me as a creative writing undergrad, and all have pieces of wisdom in them that have etched themselves so thoroughly into my consciousness that I feel like theyâre all floating over my head while Iâm writing.
While there are loads of other great books on writing, I specifically chose these because they arenât all just saying âhereâs how I write, you should do it tooââthe topics of these books are very diverse!
Reading Like A Writer by Francine Prose: Like I said, the best thing you can do to be a better writer is read. But what does that mean? What should you read? Francine Prose (yes, that is her real last name, if you can even believe it!) helps you answer those questions, and shows how looking for certain things while you read and reread can strengthen your own writing. Check it! (Addendum 9/22/14: I saw her speak at the BKBF yesterday and she is SO COOL.)
On Writing by Stephen King: This is the one book on my list that is saying âhereâs how I write, you should tooâ. But Stephen King is basically the most prolific writer ever, so I was happy to listen to his advice. Two points of his really stuck with me: 1. Adverbs are lazy and 2. Sometimes the best thing you can do for a story is put it down for a long timeâlike, 6 months or a yearâand come back to it with eyes so fresh that itâs like youâre editing someone elseâs story. Iâd be interested to know what points of his sticks with you guys!
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott: I posted about this the other day, but this book is like my writing Bible. In fact, a friend of mine who doesnât even write got to reading it, and he loved it, too. Basically if youâre a human with a goal, this book will help you. And Anne Lamott writes kinda like this wise, kind mother who isnât afraid to also tell you whatâs up. Whereas a lot of other books on writing are about the actual storytelling, I like this book because itâs more about the writerâs âlifestyleâ. Go get it now so that we can gush together!
The Philosophy of Composition by Edgar Allan Poe: This is actually just an essay, but considering that Poe is often credited with being the inventor of the modern short story, I had to include it on this list. Itâs in this essay that Poe famously defined a short story as one that can be told in one sitting. Whereas Kingâs On Writing is really âzoomed inâ on topics like word choice, this essay is a high level, theoretical piece on what a story actually is. You can get it for 99 cents on Kindle, or, even better, read it as part of a collection of all of his stories⌠ugh, theyâre SO good!!!
Elements of Style by Strunk & White: I cannot tell you how often Iâve received this little book as a giftâfor high school graduation, for college graduation, and for many Christmases and birthdays. But itâs all good because it is kinda essential for a writer to have. Elements of Style is all aboutâgasp!âgrammar. (I should probably give it a read-through again so that I can re-center and remember my grammatical skillz, actually!) Also, there are some cute versions out now that make it seem less snore-fest-yâI really want this illustrated copy!
If you read any of these books and post quotes from them on your Tumblr, tag them #yeahwritingbooks and Iâll reblog you!Â

Please feel free to add more learning focused websites.Â
*There are a lot more learning websites out there, but I picked the ones that are, as far as Iâm aware, completely free and in my opinion the best/ more useful.
This is Duolingo, a language-learning website/app that deserves some serious recognition. It offers over 10 languages for English speakers, as well as courses for non-English speakers around the world, and theyâre in the process of adding more.Â
But wait, I donât want to do any more schoolwork! Not to worry little one, Duolingo is actually more like a game. You can compete with friends, and earn âlingotsâ (which are basically Duolingo money) to buy power-ups, extra activities, and bonus skills - like Flirting.
Iâm already taking a language, what do I need this for?Â
Itâs not really a secret that most school language courses (in America, anyway) suck and only teach you to speak the language at about a third graderâs level. Which is why Duolingo is so freaking awesome.
Teachers canât give every student individualized attention, but Duolingo can. If youâre not learning the way you want to or as much as you want to in the classroom, Duolingo is a really great resource. Itâs easy, tailored to you, and really effective.
Duolingo tracks your progress and reminds you when you havenât studied for a while or need a refresher on something. Already semi-fluent in a language? No problem, just take a shortcut to more advanced subjects or test out of the lesson.Â
The lessons start with the basics (he, she, hello, thank you, etc) and move up to harder stuff. Duolingo focuses on vocabulary first, so you can learn the language and then the grammar that goes with it - much simpler than the system most schools use. It also tracks the number of words youâve learned and how well you know them.
And you donât even have to write out the flashcards!
Duolingo is perfect for reviewing everything you forgot over the summer or giving you the extra help you need. And if youâre trying to learn a language on your own, itâs fantastic - you donât have to create your own lessons. Whether youâre trying to learn your second, third, or fifth language, I seriously recommend Duolingo.
Okay, what else?
Duolingo also has discussion boards, where you can ask for help with a hard lesson, make new friends, watch for updates, and share your achievements.
Even better is the Immersion feature. It wonât send you to Spain or France, but itâs pretty awesome. Duolingo takes real articles from the internet, which users translate. You can translate articles from your native language into the language youâre learning or vice versa, which gives you more experience and makes the Internet more universal.
You can suggest new languages and track Duolingoâs progress in creating new courses. Bilinguals (older than 13) can help to create these courses. Duolingo has a long list of courses that can be contributed to, like Punjabi, Hebrew, and Vietnamese. Oh, and Dothraki, Klingon, Sindarin, and Esperanto.
And the best part? ITâS COMPLETELY FREE.Â
If you love languages or just want to pass French class this year, USE DUOLINGO. Download the app and practice a language while you wait for the bus instead of playing Angry Birds!
Coolest app Iâve ever downloaded.
This shit better work
HAH I REBLOGGED THIS LAST NIGHT AND LOOK WHAT I GOT FROM MY DAD TODAY OUT OF THE BLUE
what if we all got paper lol
GUYS I REBLOGGED THIS LAST NIGHT AND I JUST GOT $150Â
I am not even kidding but I am reblogging this twice in a row because I just got $275.
Shit, this canât hurt.Â
this is my brother two years ago. we were at the park, just me and him, and he turned to me and said âkayla, donât you ever wish there were no bad people in the world?â i thought it to be a funny thing for a 5 year old to say, but shrugged it off. last year, he didnt come home from school, we thought that being only in grade prep, he mightâve decided to go home with his bestfriend without telling us, but he didnât. Â the school confirmed they saw him get on his school bus after the bell rang. but thats all we knew, the bus driver said that he had gotten off a stop early, my mother was frantically searching the neighbourhood for him. we never found him. itâs been two years and weâre still looking for him, he was such a beautiful boy, and i cant help but think the worst. he could be anywhere in the world by now, so please, reblog this, no matter where youâre from, you could save a life. xx
if you dont reblog this i have no respect for you. help save a childâs life.

i donât really care if this isnât indie soft grunge or bubblegum enough and will âruinâ your blog. you could be saving the life of a young child and if you see this and choose to not reblog it then you must be a seriously terrible person. please reblog if you have a heart
I really hope he is found. Stay strong
For future reference.
Thank you.
For those who would ever need it. -C
reblogging here because i can see this being relevant to anyone whoâs ever tried to get out of an abusive relationship
Reblogging because that last comment made me reread the whole thing in a new light and realize this could be vital information. So, putting it out there for everyone, and hoping no one ever really needs it.

TIPS:
Remember that todayâs day in age is different from how it was back then. So donât stress about school too much.High school students today have the anxiety of what a mental patient in the insane asylum had in the 50s. Hereâs also a thing to show how times have changed.
Prioritize. List what needs to get done first and when. Sometimes getting the bigger/harder tasks is easier than conquering the smaller/easier tasks.
Set times when certain projects need to be done and stick to that deadline.
Turn your phone off or give it to your parents while doing work/studying. I know that we live in the age of technology and literally everything is at the touch of our fingertips. Honestly though you can wait on what your favorite celebrity has to say or if your crush liked your instagram photo. Youâll be more involved in that than you are into your work.
If you have trouble in a certain subject and there is no assigned seating, take advantage of the front. I guarantee youâll learn more.
Ask your teacher what exactly youâll need to know. If youâre taking notes during the year, write in the margins whether or not it will be tested. It will be easier to know what you will be tested on.
Save your exams. Half the time your teachers use the same questions (or questions similar) from your exams on your midterms or finals.
Donât try to do homework straight afterschool if you canât, despite what everyone says. Give yourself an hour, and try to get some exercise in. I find it stops me getting bored of sitting down. Not to mention helps me concentrate better.
Donât just read the material, write it, draw it, recite it, quiz yourself on it! Until you have the material down.
Join clubs, sports, or organizations! Youâre guaranteed to find friends in there. Youâll already have common interests. Start with that and go with the flow.
College kids: If you donât have assigned seating, and you have been sitting in the same seat for 2 weeks. That is you assigned seat now. Donât move or youâll screw everyone up and they will hate you.
Color code things, such as your notes. If you want to see how I color code my notes message me and Iâll be happy to show you.Â
Be kind to one another.
I think that about does it. So yeah:)
