I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.
Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!
Game preservation is important, but people rarely consider preserving the manuals as well; I really respect Vimm's Lair for being so thorough in their archival work.
I've been using Vimm's Lair for years, I have yet to see a single bad link or virus on the entire site. It's arguably the safest and most comprehensive archive of video games in existence. Preserved history
For those unaware, Vimm's Lair videogame 'vault' has been closed off from public use for a while. The archive still exists but it is of limited use for people who want to play the games themselves. I recently went through CPR training once more and the thing they always try to remind us is that the CPR alone cannot save the life of that person; they still need to go to the hospital. All it does is keep the blood pumping.
And I think about that concept in a wider scope a lot, like how I alone cannot save all the people of Gaza. Kozo Okamoto, a Japanese leftist who took part in a deadly attack on Lod Airport in Israel in 1972 and spent much of his life in Lebanon, has died in Beirut aged 78.

Okamoto joined two other members of the Japanese Red Army in an attack on Lod Airport, now Ben Gurion Airport, near Tel Aviv on 30 May 1972.
The three men arrived on a flight from Europe before retrieving rifles and grenades from their luggage and opening fire. Okamoto’s two comrades died, while Israeli forces wounded and captured him.
The attack, organised with the PFLP, killed 26 people, including 17 Christian pilgrims from Puerto Rico, and eight Israelis.
The PFLP said the operation came in response to Israel’s 1968 assault on Beirut International Airport, during which Israeli commandos destroyed more than a dozen civilian aircraft resulting in widespread international condemnation.
An Israeli court sentenced Okamoto to life imprisonment. Israel released him in 1985 after 12 years as part of a prisoner exchange with Palestinian resistance groups.
While in prison, Okamoto spent much of his sentence in solitary confinement and was forced to “eat from the ground like a dog, with his hands cuffed behind his back,” according to the PFLP.
He later reached Lebanon and received political asylum. Lebanese authorities arrested him and four other Japanese nationals in 1997 over their immigration status.
Beirut returned the other four to Japan in 2000 but allowed Okamoto to remain, repeatedly rejecting Japanese demands for his extradition.
During his Lebanese trial, Okamoto described himself as “an Arab resistance fighter”.
He made a rare public appearance in May 2022 at a Beirut cemetery containing the graves of Palestinian resistance figures, marking 50 years since the airport attack.
The Japanese Red Army emerged in 1971 as an internationalist, far-left group closely connected to the Palestinian struggle. It carried out several overseas operations before eventually disbanding.
Okamoto remained in Lebanon until his death, remembered by supporters across the region as a figure who left his homeland to stand with Palestinians confronting occupation.
It is easy to forget just how central military violence has been and remains to business as usual. More than 5 per cent of annual CO2 emissions stem from the militaries around the world. We often talk about flying and how bad it is for the climate, and it is bad, but civil aviation accounts for about 3 per cent of the total. And the 5 per cent that comes from militaries precede actual war: these are peacetime emissions, made in the process of maintaining the logistical apparatuses and fighting capacities of armies before they go to war. The emissions from the occupation army during the war on Gaza might be counted as just another category of American emissions. The US outweighs every other country; indeed, as Neta C. Crawford notes, 'the US military is the single largest institutional fossil fuel user in the world and thus the world's single largest greenhouse gas emitter In her book The Pentagon, Climate Change, and War, she brilliantly charts the development of what she calls 'the deep cycle' The militaries of first the UK and then the US found coal, followed by oil, to be indispensable for waging war: for manufacturing weapons, transporting soldiers into the battlefield, providing mobility once engaged, bringing firepower to bear on the enemy. By basing its operations on fossil fuels, the US military contributed to their spread throughout the economy; and when both the military and economy were thoroughly dependent on them, the protection of this essential commodity itself became an imperative of war. No part of the world has been so deeply formed and scarred by this cycle as the Middle East. Although Palestine is at its centre, the devastation clearly extends to other countries too: think only of Iraq and Yemen.
