zero hadn’t meant to be so aggressive. the long haul on a desert mission tracking a bandit clan through devil’s razor—during a sandstorm no less; would wear on the hardiest of vault hunters, in both body and temper.

including but not limited to zero and mordecai.

both snipers were tired, hungry, and rough around the edges after three days of blistering heat and endless dunes of sand.

finally catching up to the wayward clan had been a relief. the violence following shortly thereafter near euphoria. the loot cache was merely the icing on the proverbial cake.

black with blood and dirt, zero gets there first. they flip the latch impatiently and watch the chest open, impatient for the pearls in this oyster. a reward—finally. after three days of minimal talking and watching their feet sink into the sand.

a single shining sniper rifle gleams out, winking in the sun’s light like an eye. mordecai reaches out to grab it and zero growls, ripping it away and shoving the other back. away.

‘ mine.’

they hiss, hunched over their prize, feeling only a twinge of guilt. and a small one at that.

it’s only after the fact, that zero thinks to question whether rhys was simply being his usual clumsy self. or that this was some kind of searingly awkward attempt at flirtation.

the conference room has cleared out after yet another quarterly meeting. zero is nearly asleep from sheer boredom. all the numbers and slide show presentations were interesting enough at first—only because they’d never been entrenched in a corporate setting before. but now. after a few years of standing guard over their lanky human friend; it’s just offensively tedious.

they would yawn had they enough room in their helmet.

the assassin feels a bit irritable. they should be out and about. scouting, killing, stalking. what they were made to do.

they turn to leave, when something clips their ankle. generally razor sharp reflexes numbed by boredom are slow to reboot. their startled expression emerges as a—

—before rhys catches them. arm around their slim waist, hip to hip, face to face. for a few brief seconds. zero couldn’t imagine a more trite, overdone scenario if they tried.

they feel as though they’ve stepped into a shoujo anime. still—at least no one else is around to witness this humiliation.

they stand stiffly, sliding out of rhys’ grip.

embrassment thuds through their chest. how shameful—zero is supposed to be the alert one.

they were all so gullible. all of the vault hunters willing to trust a fellow murderer who just happened to be on the same train. they have no personal connection, yet the rag tag group took zero into their fold willingly, and without fuss.

they’d never expressed affection, certainly not outside of the battlefield, but that didn’t stop axton or say, gaige from trying to cozy up. false familiarity was their ultimate downfall.

it was only a matter of time and assessing weakness. that’s when they struck. the look of shock and betrayal on their ‘friends’ faces makes them purr with pleasure. how hilarious.

just the sort of challenge they were looking for. they turn the job into jack as soon as the last body cools. as money flows into their account, they smile.

“What? No! I don’t like posters. They’re silly decor and don’t serve a practical purpose. They’re just flimsy pieces of paper you put up on a wall, there’s nothing interesting about that,” Tannis began, trying to recover.

“You think that I, Patricia Tannis, would own this many posters? Unbelievable. Do you hear this?” She asks a poster, before looking back at Zer0, realizing she’s slipping up once again. “I will prove my earlier point by ripping one up! I’m sure the real owner- I’m looking after these for them- won’t mind if one goes to waste.”

She mouths an “I’m sorry” to one of the posters in her hands before going to rip it. She stops herself short, however, unable to actually complete the action. These posters were far too precious to her, and were in semi-mint condition. She could never do that to her collection!

zero feels like they’re in a sitcom, there’s a level of comedy to this situation that passes being cheesy and goes straight into uncomfortable territory. what’s the word?

cringy.

the sheer level of nauseating awkwardness when two socially inept beings collide is something the assassin should have seen coming. and yet here they are. still in tannis’ lab.

is she? yes. she’s talking to an innanimate object. and not ripping it as she said she would. they both know that these are her beloved posters. why can’t she just admit it?

unfortunately for both of them, zero is both stubborn and can’t resist teasing such an easily flustered target.

 Timothy sputtered at this, the O F F P U T T I N G  comment practically making him shake in his boots. Maybe it was something about the R E F L E C T I V E  surface of the other Vault Hunter’s mask. Maybe it was the fact that they were widely known for their deadly skills; especially when they had that W I C K E D  sword in their grip.  

   Should he be careful? Take the words with a grain of salt? What if they were just messing around? Testing the waters. T E A S I N G him.But what if it was just a ruse? Some sort act to get him to put his guard down so they could strike accordingly. Was there some sort of Vault Hunter code?

   Or maybe that had been some silly N O N S E N S E that  JACK  told him to make him feel better about other Hunters he might have come across or worked with. He felt lightheaded, making a small disheartened noise as he tried to calm himself before he worked into a panic attack; completely dropping his act for what must have been at L E A S T  a few minutes.

idly, they wonder what kind of hurdle the galaxy will throw at this unfortunate human next. and will he able to surmount it?
