Middle sister is officially going to be a 7th grader this year, which means she's going to be at the highschool instead of the elementary. Went with her to her open house yesterday and got stuff ready. The principle seems like a really good guy, talked to her with respect and was totally understanding of accommodations that we asked about. I can't help but worry about her, though.

my silly two cents on why I don’t think ao3 ever needs an official app are that

it works just fine as it is

if it has an app, that means it has to be approved by appstore / google play store, that means there’s a very real and high chance of appstore and play store “banning specific contents from ao3”, leading to censorship. so this goes against ao3’s core principles of being against censorship.

I think we’re so used to every single thing being an app that we don’t realize not everything has to be an app. the “should ao3 has an app or not” discourse wasn’t around before until recently, and there’s a reason for that.

also worth mentioning that all the “ao3 apps” you see are third-party apps (and these apps usually have ads). they are not affiliated with the actual ao3 in any way, shape or form. so be very careful giving these apps your login info and/or other personal information.

I think it's worth adding that it takes a lot of volunteer resources, money, and time too.

A lot of people brought up on the official newspost that, technically, they don't have to put it on an appstore. They just would need to put a direct download on their site. But the important thing is the sentence above.

What's the point of devoting those things to an app, when that can be put towards improving the actual site itself? What can an app offer that they wouldn't already put on a website? Many of the things people bring up can already be done, just not in the way they're used to. There's not, realistically, something unique or useful about an app.
